Mind the Byte and SM Genomics present their projects at the 15th Healthcare Investment Forum Barcelona

Biotechs, Mind the Byte and SM Genomics, both based at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB), were two of the eight companies selected from among thirty candidates to present their projects and their funding needs at 15th Healthcare Investment Forum Barcelona 2015, which was held on Wednesday 7 October at the headquarters of the Barcelona Medical Association (COMB). 

 

Alfons Nonell-Canals,founder and CEO of the start-up Mind the Byte –which specializes in computational drug design services- presented their business model, achievements and strategic national and international expansion plan for national for the upcoming years. Nonell-Canales also explained the main projects that the company has recently started, such as their new Saas Platform.

In order to meet the objectives set forth in their strategic business plan, Mind the Byte has launched a crowdfunding campaign. In late 2014, the company closed a funding round of 200,000 euros – led by InKemia -liderada IUCT Group. Last July, the company also raised 50,000 euros from the European Commission through the SMEs Instrument through the Horizon 2020 program.

Oriol Llampayas, co-founder and CEO of the spin-off SM Genomics has had the opportunity to show the need to prevent injuries in sports, both for professionals and amateurs, he has also described the important role that  the application of genetics, an area in which the company focuses, plays and will continue to play in this field. From their own R D, the biotech has developed the Genetic Injury Report (GIR), a comprehensive medical-genetic study to assess the predisposition of the athlete to sustain muscle, ligament and non-contact tendon injuries, and the degree of severity and the average recovery.

In order to achieve the necessary investment to accelerate and consolidate the introduction of IGL in the domestic and international markets, this biotech has launched a capital increase of  300,000 € reserved for business angels and venture capital firms, advised and managed by INEO Corporate and a parallel crowdfunding equity campaign.

 

Bridging the gap between investors and entrepreneurs

The 15th Healthcare Investment Forum is a meeting point between investors and recently created companies or teams with innovative business ideas from the biotechnology, medical devices, healthcare services sectors and projects in information technology applied to health.

The participants, previously selected by a committee of experts, have 10 minutes to present their business plans to more than a hundred investors, such as representatives of venture capital funds, private investors, entrepreneur physicians, health administrators or pharmaceutical company directors. After the presentation rounds, a networking meeting is held giving the opportunity to participating companies to interact with attending investors to generate business opportunities.

Since 2009, this event has served as a springboard to more than 100 companies after a selection process in which about 400 projects were studied based on their innovative nature and growth potential.
