Josep Samitier was a panel member at the seminar ‘Nous horitzons per a l’economia metropolitana’

IBEC's associate director Josep Samitier was a panel member and speaker at a session of the seminar series ‘Nous horitzons per a l'economia metropolitana' entitled ‘La salut, un gran potencial'. The seminar series seeks to strengthen public policies and private actions in those sectors, such as health, which have the ability to generate or export business successfully in spite of the prolonged financial crisis.

The event on 11th December, which was organised by the Cercle d’Economia and Pla Metropolità de Barcelona (PEMB), was attended by about 100 people related to health in Barcelona, including representatives from hospitals, industry, research and government. Josep’s address to the audience made the point that Catalonia can still compete globally in health because it has very good doctors, surgeons and reference centres, but it is essential that technology plays a greater role, as these professionals often do not have the equipment they need to implement all their knowledge. “The use of these new technologies will enhance the quality of life of patients,” he added.

During the event, new ideas for close collaboration between research, clinicians and industry were presented, including the creation of a ‘Centre d’innovació i formació en cirurgia i procediments d’intervencionisme’ proposed by Hospital Clinic and involving research centres such as IBEC and ICFO.
