Joaquin de Lapuente, coordinator of the UTOX, member of the Management Committee of a COST Action on Ecotoxicology

Joaquin de Lapuente, coordinator of the Experimental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology Unit () at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB), has been appointed member of the Management Committee of COST 'The transfer of engineered nanomaterials from wastewater treatment & storm water to rivers', which aims to promote research initiatives to advance scientific knowledge about the release and fate of nanomaterials in the urban water cycle.

Joaquin de Lapuente is coordinator and Director of Studies of the Experimental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology Unit (UTOX) at the Barcelona Science Park, researcher at the Research Centre for Toxicology (CERETOX) and principal investigator in training, of the Toxicology Research Group (GRET) , supervisor of non-encapsulated radioactive facilities, technical inspector of the ENA,C member of GET 15 (nanoparticles) of AENOR, and member of the Animal Research Committee of the University of Barcelona, among others. He combines these tasks with academic activities at the University of Barcelona, University of Barcelona and the Universitat de Vic.

The program COST –acronym for European Cooperation in Science and Technology– is an intergovernmental framework for cooperation founded in 1971 with the mission to establish research networks to promote international collaboration and the interaction among European scientists who have funded projects nationwide. These scientific cooperation networks called ‘COST Actions’ cover a wide range of scientific and technological areas. For each of the COST Actions approved, a Management Committee (MC) is appointed, which is responsible for the implementation, execution and coordination of the actions.

The main objective of Acció COST ES1205 is to promote research initiatives to advance the understanding of transport processes, disposal and processing of nanomaterials released to sewage systems and the aquatic environment, as well as improving cooperation between such initiatives and society and to achieve effective knowledge sharing. The project, which so far involves the participation of Croatia, Spain, Italy, Luxembourg and the UK, was started last November and will last three years.
