Jaume Piulats becomes member of the Catalan Royal Academy of Pharmacy

Jaume Piulats, who has been head of the Merck Farma i Química Bioresearch Laboratory (), located in the Barcelona Science Park, for over ten years, and who is currently a lecturer in the Department of Cell Biology and Pathological Anatomy of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Barcelona (UB), has been granted full membership of the . This award is in recognition of his scientific and professional career, which has focussed on the study of biotherapy in cancer.


The official inauguration took place on 12 September, in a special public act in which Jaume Piulats gave a paper entitled Pharmaceutical biotechnology in the treatment of cancer, one which concluded with him describing the research lines followed by his team at the LBI. In response to the paper, Pere Berga, also a member of the Academy and Managing Director for R+D at Almirall, offered a summary of Jaume Piulats’ research work and the successes he has achieved during his long professional career.

Jaume Piulats studied pharmacy at the University of Barcelona and obtained his doctorate in 1983. His professional work began in 1971 in the Carlo Erba Laboratories, where he gained experience in the field of experimental pharmacology. In 1974 he was hired by the German company Merck (Darmstadt) to set up a Department of Pharmacology in the company’s Bioresearch Laboratory in Barcelona. Since then his professional and scientific life has been linked to this laboratory, firstly as head of the Department of Pharmacology and later as Director, a post he has held since 1986 until the present day.
