Gateway of Knowledge gathers momentum

On 11 January, the Mayor of Barcelona, Jordi Hereu, accompanied by the rectors of the UB, Màrius Rubiralta, and the UPC, Antoni Giró, visited the Diagonal campus to gain first-hand information about the reorganization programmes adopted by these two universities for the development of the Gateway of Knowledge. This visit reflects the interest and mutual agreement of these two centres to undertake this project and to promote the urban developments required.

The visit, which began with a short tour around the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB, Barcelona Science Park), went on to the Faculties of Physics and Chemistry of the UB. The 7th floor of these faculties provides a panoramic view of Diagonal and particularly the centre of the “South campus”. This area will host the future Bederrida Square, around which several service buildings for joint use by these two universities will be developed, as well as several initiatives that will allow the UB to develop projects pending for the faculties of Pharmacy, Mathematics, Fine Arts, the technology buildings for the Scientific and Technical Services, and the reorganisation of free space on the campus.

The agreement between the City Council and the universities is consistent with the urban planning of the area, which contemplates the opening of a new street parallel to Diagonal Avenue, as well as lengthening Menéndez y Pelayo Street to Gregorio Marañón Avenue, which will convert secondary thoroughfares into pedestrian streets, and the development of Martí i Franquès Street.

On the other side of the campus, the “North campus”, urban planners seek to blend the Palau de Pedralbes with the School of Business Studies, the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Law.

This visit went on to the Nexus and Nexus II buildings and ended in the UPC Rector’s Office, which handled the development of the Torre Girona, among other buildings.

The reorganization of the South and North campuses and the development of new buildings for faculties and services will improve the projection and functioning of the area of Barcelona, host to the largest number of research activities and knowledge generation hub in Southern Europe.

This visit to the future Gateway of Knowledge also included: on behalf of the City Council, the deputy mayor, Francesc Xavier Casas; and on behalf of the UB, the director of the PCB, Fernando Albericio, and the director of the Projects Dept., Oriol Ripoll; and on behalf of the UPC, the President of the Social Council, Ramon Folch, and the vice-rector of Planning and Infrastructures, Teresa Rovira.
