Fresh Moves to Strengthen the Knowledge Portal

Barcelona's mayor, Jordi Hereu, the UB's acting rector, Josep Samitier, and the rector of the UPC, Antoni Giró, have this week signed an agreement to go ahead with plans for the urban development of the southern sector of the , comprising the Diagonal Nord and the Diagonal Sud campuses of the two universities.


The area is home to the Barcelona Science Park, which is a key player in the transfer of knowledge between the universities and society and a leading contributor in the promotion of the city’s economic activities. The science park is not only concerned with undertaking research work of the highest excellence, but also it promotes innovation and fosters the setting up and development of new technological firms.

The signing of the agreement took place in the Pavellons Gaudí and represents an important step in the process to develop this city zone, today, the most dynamic knowledge gateway in southern Europe. In their speeches, the two rectors, Doctors Samitier and Giró, highlighted the importance of this agreement in enabling the city to solve the urban planning needs of this zone which, for decades, has been the setting for many initiatives that have helped foster progress and enhance Barcelona’s international standing.
