Collaborative Biotechnology Platforms to boost the technology offer provided by the Grup UB

The have been developed as a result of coordination between the Proteomics, Transcriptomics and Fine Chemistry Platforms of the Scientific and Technical Services () of the Universitat de Barcelona (UB, University of Barcelona), the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB) and the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (), in an attempt to optimise the resources of these institutions of the Grup UB and boost their technology portfolio.

Started in 2005 with an agreement between the three institutions, the project allows researchers to use these facilities on equal terms and, thanks to considerable investment, they are offered special rates. These institutes have adopted this strategy in order to foster synergy between members of the Grup UB, optimise resources and jointly develop projects. In this regard, the SCT have recently extended their facilities to the fifth floor of the Faculty of Medicine, included in an agreement signed in 2001 between the UB, the Fundació Clínic per la Recerca Biomèdica and IDIBAPS. One of the units that forms part of the Proteomics Platform will be established on those premises.

After an initial transitional period, the Collaborative Biotechnology Platforms are now managed by the rector’s office. To begin joint activities, on 14 February the scientific committees of the three platforms held their first meeting together. In this regard, a has been developed to increase dissemination of the technology offered by the Grup UB to other members of the university community and to external institutions.

Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and run by highly specialized staff, the technology platforms are research support units that are involved mainly in technological development, research projects and service provision to the scientific community.
