Launch of the company Gate2Brain, based on novel technology developed at IRB Barcelona to transport drugs into the brain

The Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Sant Joan de Déu Research Institute (IRSJD)- Hospital Sant Joan de Déu (SJD) have set up Gate2Brain, a company based on a novel technology to transport drugs into the brain. The biotech, based in the Barcelona Science Park, is the second joint spin-off between IRB Barcelona and the UB to be funded by the Mind the Gap Programme run by the Botín Foundation.

A global team involving ICUB-Tech researchers detects a type of unidentified astronomical object

Researchers from the international collaborations LIGO and Virgo, in which the Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the UB (ICCUB) takes part under the coordination of Jordi Portell –co-director of the ICCUB Technology Unit, based in the Barcelona Science Park– have announced the discovery of an object of 2.6 solar masses, placing it firmly into so-called mass gap. That is an interval between the mass of the heaviest neutron star and the lightest blackhole, from which there were no observations yet.

DeepUll closes a €3.5M Series A round to improve early diagnosis of sepsis

DeepUll, with headquarters in the Barcelona Science Park, announced today the closing of a 3.5 million Euro round Series A financing led by Alta Life Sciences and Kurma Partners. This financing will allow the company –founded in 2019 by Jordi Carrera and Rafel Bru to validate the technology and start the development of the first prototypes of a new diagnostic system for early stage sepsis condition.

Eugin presents pioneering advances in fertility and human reproduction at ESHRE 2020

An analysis of the environment in which the embryos that become implanted in the uterus develop reveals a lower number of senescent (aged) cells than those that are not successful. This is the result of a study presented yesterday at ESHRE 2020, which has been led by researchers from Eugin’s Basic Research Laboratory, headquartered in the Barcelona Science Park. The group also submited at the congress another work –carried out with the Center for Genomic Regulation (CRG) and the collaboration of the National Center for Genomic Analysis (CNAG)– which reveals that the quality of the eggs can lie in the networks that create their genes.

Investment in companies in the field of life sciences and healthcare in Catalonia grew to €112M in 2019

Life sciences and healthcare start-ups and companies in Catalonia managed to attract €112M of investment in 2019, a figure that has remained stable for four years in a row and is 3% higher than in 2018, according to the study presented today by CataloniaBio & HealthTech and Biocat –based in the Barcelona Science Park– jointly with and EY. Investors and experts predict that in 2020 this will reach a record figure, boosted by an interest in the sector after Covid-19.

Bioengineering against the most resistant and deadly bacterial infections

An international team, led by Profs Giuseppe Battaglia and Loris Rizzello from the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) at the Barcelona Science Park, carried out out a study that opens the door to a new therapy capable of quickly and effectively eliminating infections caused by intracellular bacteria, the most resistant to immune defenses. This therapy, based on synthetic vesicles, could considerably reduce the dose and duration of antimicrobial treatments, thus reducing the danger of generating resistance to antibiotics of pathogens such as those leading to tuberculosis.

The company Vesismin Health –present in the Barcelona Science Park and specialized in the development and commercialization of products for the control of infections in hospital environments– has introduced the advanced UVGI technology (Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation), in different hospitals in Spain. Its professional system for medical use, UV-360, produces germicidal ultraviolet radiation for comprehensive disinfection of rooms and is equipped with motion sensors that automatically interrupt operation when they detect a presence.
