An intelligent strip will release drugs or cosmetics

Cetemmsa, a technological center specialised in intelligent materials, and , a company located at the Barcelona Science Park, dedicated to innovation for the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, have completed the research project "Dermo Smart Peptide Delivery". The objective of this project, which started in 2000, was to develop a system that incorporated an active compound –a drug or cosmetic- which could be released in a controlled manner, and has entailed an investment of 2.3 million Euros, of which 885,000 have been financed by ACC1Ó.

The final result has been an intelligent dressing prototype that incorporates, within its structures, an electronic device that can be programmed in order for the dressing to release the active compound at certain times, and to be activated by the user whenever he/she desires.

The participation of the Barcelona Science Park and Infinitec in this initiative is specific in the development of nanoencapsulated active compounds, increasing their penetration and absorption capacity through the skin, and therefore, their efficacy. These compounds will be placed on a textile active material –elaborated by Cetemmsa- which will be susceptible to external control.

Aside from Cetemmsa and Infinitec, leaders of the project, several other companies and organizations specialised in different scientific fields, such as peptide chemistry, polymer chemistry, nanotechnological platforms, intelligent materials and communication systems, have participated in this project, including Ecopol Tech, Tints Quadrada, Pannon Mechanical Constructions, the Barcelona Science Park, IQS-Gemat and the Barcelona Digital Foundation, the latter being a technological center from the TECNIO network of the Generalitat de Catalonia.
