The new Satellite Building of the PCB opens its doors to its users

On Thursday 25 October the construction work ended on the new laboratory building, the Satellite Building, of the Barcelona Science Park. From that date, and over the following weeks, the different entities and services to be installed in this new space will be progressively incorporated. Included are biotechnology and pharmaceutical firms, groups from different research institutes and scientific services.

The move into the new rooms will begin on Monday 29 October starting on the third floor. This choice of priorities means the first groups to enter the building will be the people from biotechnologies: Oryzon Genomics, ERA Biotech and Biolab, and they will thereby increase their space in the PCB, as will the newly incorporated firms Combino Pharm, specializing in the development and marketing of generic medicines, and Ordesa, which will increase the presence in the Park of research activities on new ingredients for children’s food. The third floor will also be home to two research groups of the Barcelona Molecular Biology Institute (IBMB-CSIC) headed by Dra. Isabel Usón and Dr. Joaquim Roca.

Later, the incorporation of entities on the second floor of the building will begin, including the installation of firms that participate in the PCB-Santander Bioincubator project, which is promoted by the Park, the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation and the Santander Bank, with the aim of promoting the growth and development of new biotechnology firms. These firms will be provided with a quality space and scientific-technological infrastructures as well as company management services and financial support. The companies making up the PCB-Santander Bioincubator are: Aromics, BarnaGen, Neuroscience technologies, Biocontrol Technologies, Genmedica Therapeutics, Omnia Molecular, UBAN, Agrassys, Intelligent Pharma and Infinitec Activos.

The second floor will also receive different research groups from the IBMB-CSIC headed by the following researchers: Núria Verdaguer, F. Xavier Gomis; Elisa Martí; M. A. Martínez-Balbás; Timothy Thomson; Anna M. Aragay and Ma Isabel Geli. Alongside these groups will be a group of researchers headed by Sara Marsal, coordinator of the Unitat de Recerca en Reumatologia (Rheumatology Research Unit) of the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, as well as a laboratory of Enantia, already installed in the PCB.

Finally, the first floor will house the installations of the Biomedical Research Institute (IRB Barcelona) and of the Catalan Bioengineering Institute (IBEC). Within the IRB, the people entering first will be those groups led by Lluís Ribas de Pouplana and by Ramon Eritja. Following this, in 2008, other groups will follow, such as Jens Luders and Xavier Salvatella. On this same floor, another laboratory will receive the AIDS Research Unit (Unitat de recerca de la SIDA), led by Josep Ma Gatell, head of the Infectious Diseases and Aids Area of the Agustí Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS-Hospital Clínic).

In addition to these groups, the building will also have different rooms for the Common Scientific Services (SCC-PCB), and these will be progressively set up from the end of October and throughout November, as well as a laboratory of the Radioactive Installation (IRB-PCB) and a space that will take the new installation of fish and amphibians of the Animal Experimentation Service (SEA-PCB).
