The 11th edition of the programme «¡Spend the Summer at the Park!» has started

Today, Monday July 2, at 10 am, the welcome ceremony to participants of the 11th edition of the practicum programme aimed at young university second cycle students who still have not completed their degree. The aim of this initiative, organised annually by the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) in collaboration with the IRB Barcelona, is to bring research closer to students of any university in the world through their participation in projects currently being carried out in research groups, research centres and companies based at the PCB.

The opening of the event was led first by Salvador Maluquer, executive director of the Barcelona Science Park (PCB). After the opening ceremony, Jesus Purroy, scientific director of the PCB, went on to explain to the participants the objectives, structure and activities carried out at the Barcelona Science Park, and the operation of the practicum program. To close up, Anna Vilches, Work Safety and Environment technician, informed the attendees of everything related to laboratory safety and waste management.

The duration of the «Spend the summer at the Park!» is from 2 to 3 months between July and September, with a minimum commitment of 5 hours a day. Practicum classes are conducted in groups that focus their activities mainly in the field of biomedicine and biotechnology. This year 35 young people are taking part in this initiative, 30 of which come from Spain and the rest from Europe (Germany, Greece and Italy).

Participating students will be enrolled in two technology platforms at the Barcelona Science Park- Drug Discovery Platform and Nanotechnology Platform, and in other research groups from various institutes and centres located at the PCB, such as: Computer Modelling and Simulation Laboratory (CoSMoLAB ), the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), the Institute of Molecular Biology (IBMB-CSIC), Institute of Biomedicine, University of Barcelona (IBUB), Institute for Biomedical Research (IRB Barcelona ), the Documentation Centre of Plant Biodiversity (CeDocBiV), and PCB-Admiral Mixed Unit. Several companies located at the park will also host the students, such as Arian International Projects, Bionure, Medichem, Meteosim, Omnia Molecular and SOM Biotech.

This is the eleventh consecutive year that the Barcelona Science Park is offering this practicum program. Over 300 students participated in previous years. According to assessment surveys, both students and tutors, reported to be highly satisfied with this collaboration, a fact which is confirmed by the relationship that previous articipants have maintained with their research group once the practicum program was completed.
