The 7th Summer School on Medicines (SSM7) will be held in Montreal from June 14 – 19, 2015. The program is co-organized by Biocat, Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB), University of Barcelona (UB), University of de Montreal, University Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier, CAPTOR Project – Investissement d’Avenir and Fundació INNABIOSANTE – Toulouse Cancer. SSM7 is geared towards students in the life sciences (university graduates, Masters students, PhD students, Postdocs), researchers and professionals from the biopharmaceutical industry and regulatory agencies, among others. The deadline for registration is 10 June.

The call to take part in the 14th Edition of «Spend the Summer at the Park!» is now open Blog Post

Starting today, May 4, applications are being accepted to take part in the internship program «Spend the Summer at the Park!», aimed at students doing theirs master´s degree or in their final year of their bachelor’s degree. The aim of this initiative, organized by the Parc Cientific de Barcelona (PCB), is to bring research closer to young students from any university in the world through their participation in projects undertaken at PCB. The deadline for submitting applications is May 18.

Health 2.0 Europe coming to Barcelona Blog Post

After five European editions in Paris, Berlin and London, Health 2.0 Europe will be held in Barcelona this year from 18 to 20 May at the AXA Auditorium. The conference will bring together the global health innovation community, approximately 500 delegates, including entrepreneurs, investors, executives, pharmaceutical and insurance companies, doctors and patients. Genetic “editing” a new tool to fight inherited disease Blog Post

Researchers at the Hospital Clínic, IDIBAPS, the Hospital Sant Joan de Deu and the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) have participated in a study, led by Dr. Juan Carlos Izpisúa Belmonte of the Gene Expression Laboratory at California’s Salk Institute, that uses molecular scissors to remove mitochondrial mutations in mouse eggs. In the study, published today in the journal Cell (doi: 10.1016/j.cell.2015.03.051), researchers developed a simple technique to eliminate mitochondrial mutations in eggs or embryos at an early stage of development.

IBEC receives Severo Ochoa Excellence Award Blog Post

The Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), located at the Parc Científic de Barcelona, is one of the two centres in Spain to be awarded accreditation in this edition of the Severo Ochoa Excellence programme. The Ministry for Economy and Competitiveness announced the winners of this distinction, selected by an international panel of more than 70 judges, this morning. The awards last four years and bring a million euros each year to the winning centres, as well as strengthening research capacities, improving visibility to obtain sponsorship and boosting success rates in other competitive funding programmes. 

 

The IBMB-CSIC Structural Biology Unit has been awarded a “María de Maeztu” distinction Blog Post

The Structural Biology Unit of the Institute of Molecular Biology of Barcelona (IBMB-CSIC), located at Parc Científic de Barcelona, has obtained the accreditation of Unit of Excellence “María de Maeztu”  in the first edition of this call of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. By virtue of this recognition, the research unit will be endowed with 500,000 € per year over the next four years.

Ordesa leads the Smartfoods project Blog Post

The Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) has granted the Smartfoods industrial research project for the development of smart food to a consortium of companies led by Ordesa from this R&D&i center at Parc Científic de Barcelona.The aim of this research is the design of foods and screening tests that will help reduce the risk of some of the most frequently occurring diseases that will cause 3 of every 4 deaths in 2020.

Sports clubs, patients, and scientists unite against Pompe disease Blog Post

April 15 is International Pompe Day, a rare condition that affects the muscular development of the body, causing death in infants under one year of age and severe muscle weakness in children and adults. The Asociación Española de Enfermos de Glucogenosis (AEEG) has launched an awareness campaign throughout Spain entitled “Investigar salva vidas” (Research saves lives) with the aim to inform the general public about Pompe disease—also known as Glycogenosis Type II— and to co-finance a research project that will be conducted at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), based in the PCB.
