Science Week 2005 at the PCB

The Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB, Barcelona Science Park) will participate yet another year in the tenth edition of , which will be held from 4 to 15 November throughout Catalonia. Among the activities organized, special mention is given to the open days on 8 and 10 November and other initiatives coordinated by research groups at the Park.


Science Week is organized by the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation, with the support of the Dept. of Universities, Research and the Information Society, and 100 institutions and organizations operating in the research and innovation sector in Catalonia. This year’s edition, named “Live Science!” includes a total of 355 events in 65 locations around Catalonia aimed at the diffusion of scientific and technological knowledge.

On Tuesday 8 and Thursday 10 November the PCb will hold open days entitled “What is the Parc Científic de Barcelona? What is research about?”. In addition to a presentation about the Park, a doctoral student will give an explanation of his/her thesis. Accompanied by this student, and in a game-like format, the participants, mainly secondary school students, will be invited to gain first hand experience of the work performed by researchers at the PCB by visiting several laboratories and services used by the doctoral student in the course of his/her research project. The open days will be split into two sessions per day, one starting at 10h and the other at 15.30h. For reservations please call 93 403 48 62.

In addition, the of the UB, located on PCB premises, will organize several workshops to mark Science Week. On Saturday 5 November at 11h, the Centre Cultural Sant Joseph in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat (Av. Isabel La Catòlica, 32) will host a story workshop for children called “How the stars, planet and beings were created? Stories from Australian mythology”. Furthermore, on Monday 7 November in El Masnou (Local de Gent del Masnou – C/ Doctor Josep Agell, 9) and Friday 11 November in Alella (Casal de Joves Can Gaza -Av. Sant Josep de Calassanç, 23-25,1a planta), both at 19h, a talk/workshop will be held called “You are unique! Fingerprints and anthropology”. Finally, on Thursday 10 November, Bey Gay will give a conference entitled “Children of the ice: sacrifices of Inca mummies”, which will also be held at 19.30h in the Centre Cultural Sant Josep in L’Hospitalet del Llobregat.

In addition, the Documentation Centre on Plant Biodiversity () will collaborate another year in its traditional exhibition of fungi and lichens, which will be set up in the Edifici Històric of the UB and will be open to visitors from 9 to 13 November. Organized by the UB lecturers Carme Barceló and Xavier Llimona, the exhibition will present 300 fungi and lichens, classified according to their scientific and popular names, and with information about morphological features and edibility.
