Medichem Expands Facilities at the PCB

Medichem, a specialist in the production of active ingredients for the pharmaceutical industry worldwide, has recently expanded its facilities at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB). The company now enjoys more than 300 sq m of laboratory space for its research and its team of fifteen people.

The expansion will enable the company to strengthen its current lines of research, serving as a platform for the installation of new experimental and analytical methods. The new facilities do not require any change of location for Medichem, which remains on the first floor of the Modular Building. It does, however, provide over 100 sq m of additional space for the company within the PCB.

Currently, Medichem is working in lines of research that focus on the investigation and development of molecules with therapeutic properties that may be useful in the treatment of illnesses like diabetes and infectious processes caused by viruses, as well as diseases that affect the central nervous and cardiovascular systems, to name but a few of their potential applications.

Medichem began operations in the seventies and has production plants in Celrà (Girona) and Malta, where it manufactures a wide range of active ingredients for the pharmaceutical industry worldwide. Its manufacturing processes are frequently audited according to cGMP guidelines (current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations) by various regulatory agencies, including the US FDA, whose last three inspections in 1999, 2002 and 2006 raised no issues. Medichem was also the first company to take up residence in the Barcelona Science Park, where it has been since 2001.

Currently, Medichem exports its products to more than fifty countries, including European Union members, the United States and Japan, and its annual turnover is in excess of fifty million euros.
