The PCB implements IP telephony on its premises

Last summer we announced that the University of Barcelona and the PCB, together with their telephone operator, had started a project to migrate the technology currently used, moving from analogue telephony to IP telephony.

The installation phase of the physical infrastructure (cabling) and the interconnection to be able to transmit to the operator has now been completed. The installation of the communication devices to integrate the telephone base in place at the PCB with the new technology is scheduled for between 20 and 23 February.

Two types of device are currently available:

  • Analogue telephones: you can continue to use them after migration, without a change of device.
  • Digital telephones: these devices are incompatible with the new technology and will need to be replaced.

The replacement of digital devices will take place from 20 to 23 February. The procedure will be as follows:

  • A Telefónica technician, accompanied by PCB staff, will come to set up your new IP phone. The digital phone will still be operational and should be used until the day of migration.
  • The new device will be connected to the network point: the network cable will connect your computer to the new phone and the new phone to the computer. Connectivity will not be affected except while this procedure is being carried out.
  • The new device must be connected to a mains socket.
  • On the day of migration, the digital phone will cease to work and the new phone will become operational. As the digital phone will no longer work you can get rid of it.

We will soon provide you with the catalogue of functionalities and programming available from both the analogue telephones and the new devices.

The date of the migration will be announced as soon as this is finalised with the operator.
