From the lab to La Pedrera

The Barcelona Science Park and the CatalunyaCaixa Foundation inaugurated today, the 10th edition of the «» Fair, which will take place on 24, 25 and 26 April at La Pedrera in order to exhibit the various projects carried out at research centers and institutes in Barcelona to bring research closer to the citizens, promote careers in this field and contribute to scientific understanding and awareness in society.

The event was attended by Salvador Maluquer, General Director of the Barcelona Science Park (PCB); Jordi Alberch, Vice Rector of Research at the University of Barcelona; and Salvador Garcia, Director of the Knowledge, Education and Research of the CatalunyaCaixa Foundation.

During the presentation, the awards for the «» program were given to the winning students who developed their research work of secondary school at the PCB. The winners were: Adrián Gonzalez, from the Sant Miguel dels Sants secondary school (PCB tutor: Nieves Hernandez); Beatriz Martin, from the Amor de Dios secondary school (PCB tutor: Berant Guixer), and Gemma Maestro, Escola Municipal de Treball school (PCB tutor: Miguel Moreno).

After the presentation event, a guided tour of the Fair stands was given by Rosina Malagrida, technical director of the Dissemination of Science department at the PCB, and Mireia Bes, Coordinator of «Recerca en directe» Fair.

In this 10th edition of the Fair, seven research groups moved part of their laboratory setting to La Pedrera so that visitors can participate in their experiments with the same tools and materials with which they conduct their research. To encourage interaction with the audience, each stand formulates an “enigma” which attendees must solve following the scientific method.

This year, the variety of research projects presented come from diverse areas of knowledge such as geology, biomedicine, archeology, environmental epidemiology, sports medicine and music technology. Discovering how to build a “robot surgeon” (robotic surgery unit) and attempting to perform surgery through its manipulation; breaking down the DNA to develop new therapies against cancer; creating and interacting with our music avatar, and visualizing how organisms from the dinosaurs era were and behaved, are some of the projects in which visitors can participate.

Research centers participating in this edition are: the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), the Group of Sports Cardiology of the Institute of Biomedical Research August (IDIBAPS)-Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, the Music Technology Group at Pompeu Fabra University, the Centre for Prehistoric Archaeological Heritage of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB-CEPAP), the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) and the Ambar:Es Research Group, of the University of Barcelona (UB).

The «Recerca en directe» Fair is carried out with the support of the Department of Economy and Knowledge of the Generalitat of Catalonia and it is part of the portfolio of the R+D+i activities of the CatalunyaCaixa Foundation and the science dissemination program «» of the Barcelona Science Park which offers more than 120 activities with the participation of 6,000 people every year.

These activities are free of charge and are open to the general public as well. However, due to space requirements groups consisting of more than 10 p people should make a previous reservation. Visiting hours are from 10:00h to 14:00h and from 16:00h to 20:00h.
