Experience Science with the Parc Científic de Barcelona

This coming, Saturday October 19, a series of experiment workshops called «Do research !" , an initiative organized annually by the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB ), in collaboration with the Catalunya - La Pedrera Foundation, will be starting at La Pedrera. These workshops are aimed at bringing research to all citizens and encourage scientific vocations among young people. The workshops will be conducted by researchers at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) - located at the PCB, and at the University of Barcelona, who will move part of their laboratory sets to this iconic space to encourage interaction with the public and give visitors the opportunity to participate in their experiments, using the same tools and materials they normally use.

In this eighth edition, four different proposals will allow participants to create a new drug to treat Alzheimer’s disease using peptides and proteins; analyze DNA samples to find out who the perpetrator of a crime was, perform a bacterial transformation to find a therapeutic target for atherosclerosis, and learn all phases of the development process of a new drug for Parkinson’s disease.

The “Do research!” program is part of the Knowledge Area of the Catalunya – La Pedrera Foundation and the outreach program of science ‘Research in Society” organized by the Parc Científic de Barcelona, which offers more than 120 activities involving 4,500 people each year. Workshops are out with the support of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) – the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO ) and the Institute of Culture of the Barcelona City Hall.

Although the event is aimed particularly at young people, it is an open space for all citizens. Workshops are free of charge, on prior registration, and will take place every Saturday, starting on the 19 of October and on 16, 23 and 30 of November, from 11.00 to 13.00 hours at the La Pedrera building. These activities will also be offered weekdays throughout the entire school year to the educational community at the OpenLab Center at the PCB.
