Researchers discover the adhesion mechanism of the bacterium that causes 40% of atypical pneumonias Blog Post

Researchers from Institute of Molecular Biology of Barcelona (IBMB-CSIC) –based in the Barcelona Science Park– and the Institute for Natural Science and Technology at the University of Osaka, has succeeded in determining the three-dimensional structure of proteins by means of which the bacteria Mycoplasma pneumoniae –that cause 40% of atypical pneumonias– attaches itself to human cells and initiates infection. From the structure, this team of scientists have designed antibodies that decrease this adhesion capacity and opens the door to develop new therapies and vaccines against this pathogen.

Duguet is an accredited consultant and expert in the definition, management, evaluation and optimization of the production processes of medicines for the pharmaceutical industry. He has worked in the pharmaceutical industry for over three decades for large multinationals, including Sanofi, where he led this area for over 15 years.

Oncoheroes Biosciences and the Super Sam Foundation walking together for the pediatric cancer Blog Post

Oncoheroes Biosciences announces the receipt of funding from Super Sam Foundation, a pediatric cancer nonprofit organization. Oncoheroes is a Boston based biotech with its European headquarters at the Barcelona Science Park. The startup was co-founded in 2017 by Ricardo Garcia, a serial entrepreneur from Barcelona, and the Italian scientist Cesare Spadoni, two parents touched by childhood cancer and determined to change the outlook for these young patients.

 

Droplite opens seed round of 600.000€ to accelerate the manufacturing development of its smart medical diagnostics device Blog Post

Droplite, located in the Parc Cientific de Barcelona (PCB), has recently started the industrial design and manufacturing development of its smart diagnostics device, focused on point of care (POC). The company, that it was born in 2018, as a spinoff of the Institute of Photonics Sciences (ICFO), from the hand of two entrepreneurs: André Guedes (CEO) and Rafael Porcar (CTO), was recognized with the Seal of Excellence by the European Union and with the Innovative SME seal from the Ministry of Science and Innovation.

 

Baula donates 18,000 cleaning kits to Càritas Girona Blog Post

The startup Baula, based in the Barcelona Science Park, has donated 18,000 kits of ecological cleaning products to Cáritas Diocesana de Girona, which will be distributed as basic necessities to vulnerable families cared for by the entity. The capsule format facilitates transportation and logistics compared to conventional products. The provision of goods to 18,000 families would equate to 72,000 kilograms of conventional cleaning products. In comparison, Baula’s tablets weigh a total of 4,500 kilograms.

 

SOM Biotech announces the in vitro confirmation of three drug candidates for COVID-19 with the Ewha Womans University Blog Post

SOM Biotech, a clinical-stage drug discovery and development company based in the Barcelona Science Park, announces the in vitro validation of three drug candidates as new therapies for the treatment of COVID-19 in collaboration with the Ewha Womans University in South Korea. A patent application has been filed to provide method of use protection for the three compounds worldwide. All three drugs can be repurposed to treat COVID-19 and the company is working on the fastest way to prove them in patients.

 

A Eugin study wins the Clinical Science Award for best clinical poster at ESHRE 2019 Blog Post

The fresh or frozen eggs of the same woman are equally fertile. This is the main conclusion of a study conducted by Eugin Group researchers which won the Clinical Science Award for best clinical poster at the 35th Annual Meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE). The research went head-to-head with 800 other studies, and its principal investigator was David Cornet-Bartolomé, a member of Eugin’s Basic Research Laboratory headquartered in the Barcelona Science Park.
