OBD calls for government regulation of conscientious objection in healthcare Blog Post

The Opinion Group of the Bioethics and Law Observatory () of the University of Barcelona has publicly presented a document that aims to reconcile two interests that could, in theory, clash with one another: the possibility that health professionals exercise conscientious objection and the rights of citizens to receive certain legally-established health services, for example, voluntary termination of pregnancy or prescription of the morning-after pill. The document was officially presented within the Barcelona Science Park, where the OBD has its office, during the I International Conference on the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights, which was organised by the of the University of Barcelona, a position currently held by Maria Casado, Director of the OBD.

María Casado, director of the of the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), located in the Barcelona Science Park, has been honored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) with the concession of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics at the UB. The creation of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics at the UB means international recognition both of María Casado and of the activity she is developing at the Bioethics and Law Observatory, and which carries out a line of research and transference of pluridisciplinary knowledge on the ethical, social, and juridical implications of biotechnology and biomedicine.

El proper dijous 17 de maig, a les 19 hores, l’investigador Joan Brunet de la Unitat d’Avaluació del Risc de Càncer i Prevenció de l’Institut Català d’Oncologia impartirà un seminari sobre les implicacions bioètiques de les proves de diagnòstic genètic. Aquesta activitat, organitzada per l’Associació de Bioètica i Dret de la Universitat de Barcelona, tindrà lloc a la torre D del Parc Científic de Barcelona i és gratuïta, però cal confirmar l’assistència prèviament perquè l’aforament és limitat.

The director of the Bioethics and Law Observatory, María Casado, awarded the Narcís Monturiol Medal Blog Post

On 26 October, the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) announced this year’s winners of the Narcís Monturiol Medals for scientific and technological merit. This year two institutions and thirteen people have been awarded this recognition, among these María Casado, PhD in law, director of the (OBD), located at the Parc Científic de Barcelona, and professor of philosophy of law, ethics and politics at the Universitat de Barcelona (UB, University of Barcelona).
