Labin, a groundbreaking company in plant nutrition, inaugurates new lab at Barcelona Science Park

Labin, a pioneer in manufacturing and commercialising plant nutrition products, has opened a R&D lab at the Barcelona Science Park. With over 70 years in the business, the company – with a presence in over 40 countries – has become one of the top brands in the sector, nationally and internationally, thanks to the quality and innovation of its solutions to improve plant and crop nutrition, health and disease prevention.

Labin, the trade name of family-run company Productos Labin SL currently in the hands of the third generation, was founded in 1948 in Igualada (Barcelona) to manufacture fertilisers with rawhide discarded by tanners in the area.

Over its more than 70 years in the business, the company has successfully transformed into one of the top brands in plant nutrition, nationally and internationally with a presence in over 40 countries, focusing on environmentally friendly products, the circular economy and a firm commitment to continuous innovation, which have made it a pioneer in commercialising certified organic products.

This strategic, ongoing commitment to R&D has led Labin to open a new lab at the Barcelona Science Park to provide support for its R&D Department and various projects under way.

“From this new R&D lab, we want to accelerate development of new microbial fertilisers and biostimulants, and the Barcelona Science Park offers us the environment and facilities we need to do that”, says Dr Miriam Navarro, head of the company’s R&D lab at PCB.

Merging the circular economy and industrial progress

Labin’s products and solutions continue advancing at the pace of changes in agronomic techniques and agrifood, through the process of research, development and innovation the company has strengthened in recent years.

The company analyses and studies the plants’ natural mechanisms to induce these processes naturally and is always researching issues connected to plant nutrition to provide the values consumers want and producers need.

Agriculture is always evolving, and we evolve with it. All our products are the result of a symbiosis between the ‘Labin philosophy’ and the ‘Labin technology’, in order to help make agriculture healthier and more modern, profitable and eco-friendly. Labin contributes its know-how in areas like complete, balanced nutrition, assimilation, biohealth and respecting and imitating natural processes, concepts that are universally accepted and recommended today”,  explains Dr Navarro.

But it’s not just their products that are environmentally friendly. The manufacturing methods and people who produce and use them are too.

“We strive to minimise the waste generated by our production processes and develop products to reuse other compounds, decreasing our use of natural resources in order to help care for the planet”, notes Celia Castañeda, head of R&D at Labin.
