Barcelona Science Park takes science out onto the street in the Festa Major de Sants

02.09.2019

Under the slogan of “Science takes to the streets to celebrate”, Barcelona Science Park has participated once again this year in the Festa Major de Sants through the researcher and scientific disseminator Carlos Heras. More than fifty people of all ages in the Sants neighbourhood of Barcelona were able to get a first-hand taste of how research can be fun and enjoyable as well as interesting.

As part of this year’s local celebrations in the Sants neighbourhood, on 29 August, researcher and disseminator Carlos Heras invited people to take part in a physics and chemistry experiments workshop in Carrer Alcolea de Baix. More than 50 people had a go at common laboratory tests, learning how to use natural methods to analyse the acidity of various substances, to obtain a sample of their own DNA with everyday materials; or find out what’s behind the combustion of sugar.

The activity took place as part of the Research in Society programme run by Barcelona Science Park, is supported by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (Fundació Espanyola per a la Ciència i la Tecnologia, FECYT) of the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the Barcelona City Council’s Municipal Institute of Culture (Institut de Cultura de Barcelona, ICUB).

La Festa Major de Sants is one of the largest celebrations in this district of Barcelona. Once again this year, the Celebrations Committee fo the Carrer Alcolea de Abaix decided to shine a spotlight on scientific outreach as part of a fun and varied programme of cultural and educational activities for everyone.
