The Barcelona Science Park is taking part in the 18th edition of the Barcelona Science Festival

The Museum of History of Barcelona served as the central venue for the Barcelona Science Fest, hosting 160 scheduled scientific outreach activities: from games, experiments, workshops, shows, guided tours, to exhibitions. This year, the Science Fest reached its 18th edition and, for the second consecutive year, took place at its facilities in El Born and Plaça Comercial over the weekend of May 30th, 31st, and June 1st. The festival is an ideal space for scientific outreach to the public, offering activities for all ages during daytime hours and for youth and adults on Saturday evening.

In this 18th edition, 160 scientific and technological outreach activities took place across 28 different venues, involving more than 120 institutions, organizations, and research groups with over 300 participants.

The Barcelona Science Park participated with an escape room designed for 25 children aged 10 and older, accompanied by their families—totaling over 50 participants. They took part in a unique scientific adventure aimed at studying the current situation of women in science, solving puzzles, and conducting experiments to learn about five female scientists who have made significant contributions to various fields of research, both in the past and present.

The escape room, led by University of Barcelona (UB) researcher Alba Ortega, aimed to raise awareness about the phenomenon known as the “leaky pipeline,” which represents the loss of female talent in the scientific world. The pipeline was used as a metaphor for the scientific careers of women, with leaks symbolizing the various reasons why female scientists leave the field. Solving the puzzles provided tools to repair the pipeline and prevent the loss of female talent.

This activity is part of the RESSÒ program, the Barcelona Science Park’s initiative to establish a dialogue channel between the public and researchers, and to encourage scientific vocations among young people. This program is supported by the Barcelona City Council. In 2016, it was awarded the Educational Quality Seal by the Barcelona Pedagogical Coordination Council (CCP), and in 2018, it received the Barcelona Educational Innovation Award from the Barcelona City Council, recognizing initiatives carried out in the city to promote educational opportunities and social inclusion.
