Spring, elegance and splendour near the PCB

During the month of May, Cervantes Park dresses up for the New Rose International Contest. But very close to the Park, we also have other splendid gardens that are well worth a visit, especially in spring.

In Palau de Pedralbes there is a historic garden designed by the architect and town planner Nicolau Rubió i Tudurí (Mahón, 1891 – Barcelona, 1981). The area is home to a wide variety of conifers (stone pine, Aleppo pine, various cypresses) and cedars of various origins which are very rare in the city (Himalayan cedar, Atlas cedar, Japanese cedar and California incense cedar) that stand out for their size and age.

Among the vegetation, you can contemplate an array of unique sculptural elements. There is even a fountain designed by Antoni Gaudí, hidden in a small grove of bamboo, which was discovered in 1984, after extensive clearing of the vegetation. The park has naturalised ponds that are home to amphibians such as the Iberian green frog (Pelophylax perezi), the Mediterranean tree frog (Hyla meridionalis) and the common midwife toad (Alytes obstetricans). Other animals such as squirrels and a wide variety of forest birds can also be seen along with numerous parrot colonies.

The gardens of Palau de Pedralbes are a green corridor of peace and fresh air in the dense and noisy city, and in spring they truly are a sight to behold.
