5 June World Environment Day (a time for reflection!)

In 1972, the United Nations designated 5 June World Environment Day in order to raise global environmental awareness and increase political focus and action.

This year’s campaign focuses on land restoration, drought resilience and desertification under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration”. According to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, 40% of the world’s land is now degraded, affecting half the world’s population and threatening 50% of global GDP. In addition, droughts have increased by 29% since 2000 and could affect more than three-quarters of the world’s population by 2050 if urgent action is not taken.

We are facing a growing climate emergency. The recent drought has shown us that individual and collective action matters. We must all work together to bring about changes that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reverse the degradation of the planet.
