The IBMB researcher Irene Hernando-Herráez has received an ERC Starting Grant to investigate cellular aging

The Institute of Molecular Biology of Barcelona (IBMB-CSIC), located in the Barcelona Science Park (PCB), will receive one of the three Starting Grant awards from the European Research Council (ERC) granted to projects of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), each worth 1.5 million euros. These prestigious grants are aimed at young scientists leading projects of excellence.

The researcher Irene Hernando-Herráez, leader of the Epigenetics and Single Cell Dynamics group at IBMB, will study how the proliferative capacity of muscle stem cells influences their functions and behaviour. To do this, the molecular marks that determine cellular identity and that may be lost over time will be analysed. For example, the study will examine whether cells that divide more frequently retain these marks or, conversely, lose them.

“The main objective of the project is to uncover the mechanisms that govern the loss of cellular function with age,” says Hernando-Herráez. “Finding the relationship between the different molecular and functional alterations will help us explore strategies that could prevent or reverse ageing,” she adds.

The IBMB is a research centre of the CSIC dedicated to the study of molecular biology, biochemistry, and biomedicine. Its activities range from basic research on the fundamental mechanisms of life to the development of new therapeutic strategies and biomedical technologies.
