Genetic “editing” a new tool to fight inherited disease Blog Post

Researchers at the Hospital Clínic, IDIBAPS, the Hospital Sant Joan de Deu and the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) have participated in a study, led by Dr. Juan Carlos Izpisúa Belmonte of the Gene Expression Laboratory at California’s Salk Institute, that uses molecular scissors to remove mitochondrial mutations in mouse eggs. In the study, published today in the journal Cell (doi: 10.1016/j.cell.2015.03.051), researchers developed a simple technique to eliminate mitochondrial mutations in eggs or embryos at an early stage of development.

The Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) has granted the Smartfoods industrial research project for the development of smart food to a consortium of companies led by Ordesa from this R&D&i center at Parc Científic de Barcelona.The aim of this research is the design of foods and screening tests that will help reduce the risk of some of the most frequently occurring diseases that will cause 3 of every 4 deaths in 2020.

April 15 is International Pompe Day, a rare condition that affects the muscular development of the body, causing death in infants under one year of age and severe muscle weakness in children and adults. The Asociación Española de Enfermos de Glucogenosis (AEEG) has launched an awareness campaign throughout Spain entitled “Investigar salva vidas” (Research saves lives) with the aim to inform the general public about Pompe disease—also known as Glycogenosis Type II— and to co-finance a research project that will be conducted at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), based in the PCB.

iMols, the Mind the Byte cloud platform for drug discovery, is now available free of charge Blog Post

Mind the Byte –based at the Parc Científic de Barcelona and specializing in the provision of services and solutions for computational drug discovery- has opened cloud platform for use by the scientific, academic and business community. iMols is the first cloud platform specifically designed for drug discovery using the SaaS (‘Software as a Service’) approach. Mols is a SaaS platform breaks the two main barriers faced by computational drug design: implementation costs – it eliminates investments in servers and software licensing- and the training of the team, as it is an easy-to-use and intuitive tool requiring very little training.

Agrasys, a spin-off of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) located at the Barcelona Science Park, has launched to the market Tritordeum, the first newly created cereal marketed in the world for human consumption. The official presentation took place at Hotel Claris in Barcelona, with a welcome by members of Agrasys and the participation of master baker Josep A. Ribas, author of the Cruixent artisan breads bakery, and Chef Josep M. Freixa, presently head of the Tradició Freixa Restaurant (awarded with a Michelin star).

One hundred twenty-five secondary teachers from across Europe participate in the 2nd course Xplore Health Blog Post

The 2nd course of Xplore Health entitled “Bringing biotechnology revolution into the classroom’, was held at the Open Lab at the Barcelona Science Park on 7, 14 and 21 November. The course was aimed secondary school teachers in Catalonia and was organized by the Public Engagement Unit of the PCB with the support of the and the collaboration of the , the of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the European School Net (EUN). On this occasion, the program was offered in parallel at the Museum of La Coruña, and through the virtual community –coordinated by the EUN– which brings together 175,000 teachers and 95,000 European schools.

«Tools of Science», the first European gateway that offers biotech companies an online database of the best core facilities and specialist service companies from the major bioregions of Europe, as well as funding opportunities available at national and international scale for their R & D projects, was launched today. The gateway has been developed as part of the «ABCEurope» project (Advanced Biotech Cluster Platforms for Europe) – promoted by the European Council of Bioregions (CEBR) of which the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) is a full member– with the aim to create a network comprising 13 European bioregions—key drivers in life sciences— to provide more efficient support services offered to SMEs in the biotechnology area.
