5 June, World Environment Day: reflection and action!

For decades, organisations such as WHO and the UN have established special dates to promote and raise awareness of basic human issues. Concepts such as mental health, cancer, nutrition, physical activity and TB have designated days to remind us of the importance of health. Aspects such as environmental education, marshes, oceans, forests, land and the environment are also highlighted.

In 1972 the United Nations marked 5 June as World Environment Day in order to stimulate global awareness and to intensify political attention and action. This international day has become a platform from which to urge us to move forward in addressing the environmental issues included in the Sustainable Development Goals. Governments, corporations, non-governmental organisations and celebrities from around the world join World Environment Day themed activities to champion a wide range of environmental causes.

The slogan “Beat Plastic Pollution” has been chosen for 2025 to call for collective action to tackle the global challenge of plastic waste. Plastic pollution is one of the most serious environmental threats today. The problem requires a joint approach by governments, industry and consumers to curb the use of single-use plastics, to achieve truly recyclable materials and to find alternatives.
Planetary health, and therefore our own, is at stake, and we all need to be reminded of this periodically. Let’s be activists in minimising plastic in our lives!
