Holidays … a great deal for me but is it a great deal for the planet?

The good weather and breaks in the work and school calendar have us thinking about going on holiday. We are usually looking for a change of routine and think about travelling.

For weeks now, advertising has shown us spectacular plans at unbelievable prices: flying to America for €240, visiting the Balearic or Canary Islands for less than €50, sailing in the Mediterranean at rock-bottom prices, packages of stays in luxurious hotels with unique offers, bank loans to spend big, interest-free instalment purchases… Can the planet really cope with these excessive rates of consumption?

Tourist areas no longer have the natural capacity for regeneration. Pressure from tourism depletes essential resources such as water, food and electricity and creates more waste and wastewater, while transport causes air pollution.

Let’s plan our holidays responsibly and with sensitivity. If we decide to travel, let it be to bring benefits to the local population, respect the culture and traditions and minimise the environmental footprint on the surroundings.

This June, we are experiencing excessive temperatures that only exacerbate the current climatic crisis. Only a collective change of habits will help advance climate change policies to keep global temperatures from rising more than 1.5ºC and to achieve energy sustainability.
