Inauguration of the Laval Hall

The inauguration of the Laval Hall, part of the Parc Científic de Barcelona's Modular Building, is held on May 27. The ceremony is attended by the Director General of Laval Technopole’s Biotech City (Quebec), Pierre Bélanger, who spoke about the Canadian project “Laval – Biotechnology City”.

The naming of the Laval Hall aims both to strengthen the links between the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB, Barcelona Science Park) and innovative international settings and promote technology transfer. The project chosen on this occasion was Laval Technopole, of which the Biotech City forms a part, as its operational model is very similar to that of the PCB. The aim is to put the PCB firmly on the map of international bioclusters.

Laval Technopole and Biotech City

, situated on the island of Laval, is an industrial park centre aimed at promoting and developing this area of Quebec. As one of its areas of excellence is biomedicine a sector known as Biopole has been created in order to bring together research centres, laboratories and related companies. The critical mass of Laval Biopole has also led to the setting up of the , Canada’s first science and business centre.

Opened in 2001, the heart of the Biotech City is the Laval Science and High Technology Park, which brings together the university campus of the Armand-Frappier Scientific Research Institute (INRS) and science and technology-based firms. The City also houses research laboratories, specialized centres, a company incubator, space for setting up enterprises, and several large biotechnology and biopharmaceutical companies.

With these components the Biotech City has become a centre for knowledge, inter-university cooperation and science-based business, as well as being a place of intense research activity, learning and commercial development. The activity carried out is bolstered by extensive technological facilities aimed at supporting research, and a number of organizations are on hand to offer help with commercialization and training. The wide range of companies located within the Biotech City have been able to establish themselves on site thanks to the creation of business space linked to a series of financial incentives offered by the Quebec government.
