SUMMARY:Unravelling the Molecular Architecture of the Commander Trafficking Machinery
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Michael Healy \nPostdoctoral Research Fellow\, Institute for Molecular Bioscience\, The University of Queensland\, Brisbane\, Australia. \nAbstract \nThe Commander complex is required for endosomal recycling of diverse transmembrane cargos and is mutated in Ritscher-Schinzel syndrome. It comprises two sub-assemblies: Retriever composed of VPS35L\, VPS26C\, and VPS29; and the CCC complex which contains twelve subunits: COMMD1- COMMD10 and the coiled-coil domain-containing (CCDC) proteins CCDC22 and CCDC93. Combining X-ray crystallography\, electron cryomicroscopy\, and in silico predictions\, we have assembled a complete structural model of Commander. Retriever is distantly related to the endosomal Retromer complex but has unique features preventing the shared VPS29 subunit from interacting with Retromer-associated factors. The COMMD proteins form a distinctive hetero-decameric ring stabilized by extensive interactions with CCDC22 and CCDC93. These adopt a coiled-coil structure that connects the CCC and Retriever assemblies.

SUMMARY:Erebosis\, a new cell death mechanism during homeostatic turnover of gut enterocytes
DESCRIPTION:Many adult tissues are composed of differentiated cells and stem cells\, each working in a coordinated manner to maintain tissue homeostasis during physiological cell turnover. Old differentiated cells are believed to typically die by apoptosis. Recently we discovered a previously uncharacterized\, new phenomenon\, which we named erebosis based on the ancient Greek word erebos (“complete darkness”)\, in the gut enterocytes of adult Drosophila. Cells that undergo erebosis lose cytoskeleton\, cell adhesion\, organelles and fluorescent proteins\, but accumulate Angiotensin-converting enzyme (Ance). Their nuclei become flat and occasionally difficult to detect. Erebotic cells do not have characteristic features of apoptosis\, necrosis\, or autophagic cell death. Inhibition of apoptosis prevents neither the gut cell turnover nor erebosis. Erebosis is considered a cell death mechanism for the enterocyte flux to mediate tissue homeostasis in the gut. I will discuss our latest progress towards understanding of the erebosis mechanism.

SUMMARY:Cryo-electron tomography-the cell biology that came in from the cold
DESCRIPTION:Recent technological developments\, such as direct electron detectors and cryo-focused ion beam milling\, allow cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) to image cells with unprecedented resolution. My group capitalizes on these advances to investigate the structural basis of cell function and pathological dysfunction in situ. In this talk\, I will discuss the basics of cryo-ET technology\, our recent data shedding light into the toxic roles of protein aggregation in neurodegenerative diseases\, and the perspectives of our future work.

DESCRIPTION:“HeLa et al.” is the result of the creative process carried out by visual artist Tess Marschner during her artistic residency at the Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC). \nIn her predominantly videographic and research-based works\, she delves into the impact of scientific and theoretical knowledge on social dynamics. Her exploration focuses on feminist subjects\, non-human entities and animal actors. \nThe video essay titled “HeLa et al.” serves as a contemplation on female and reproductive (parts of) bodies within techno-sciences: Henrietta Lacks’ immortal cell line\, the cloned sheep Dolly\, wombs\, eggs and mice show up both as technical components of the scientific realm as well as entities that challenge the notion of the human\, raising ethical considerations. \n“HeLa et al.” was developed during her Artistic Residency at IBEC 2023/24.

DESCRIPTION:Servei de Fisioteràpia al Parc…ara també els dimarts! \nDavant la bona resposta i l’increment de demanda dels usuaris i les usuàries del PCB\, a partir del proper mes d’abril el Servei de Fisio s’amplia també als dimarts\,  amb el mateix horari. \nCost de l’activitat: Els imports són de 20€ per una sessió de 30 minuts i 36€ per una sessió de 60 minuts. El PCB cedeix gratuïtament una sala perquè un fisioterapeuta diplomat pugui fer les visites.
