SUMMARY:New tricks of an old player: senescence induced-cellular plasticity in tissue regeneration and degeneration
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Han Li – Group Leader – Cellular plasticity in age-related pathologies  (Department of Development and Stem Cell Biology) – Institut Pasteur\, Paris\, France. \nCellular senescence is a form of stress response to various stimuli that leads to stable cell-cycle arrest\, which plays a crucial role in tumor suppression and negatively impacts healthy aging. Recent studies have expanded their roles in embryonic development and tissue regeneration. \nCellular plasticity is the capacity of a cell to adopt different identities in response to environmental stimuli. Cellular reprogramming to pluripotency is the best example of how plastic a terminally differentiated cell can have\, which has tremendous implications in tissue regeneration and tumorigenesis. Although it is increasingly recognized that adult somatic cells can acquire plasticity under both physiological and pathological conditions\, the mechanisms underlying cell fate conversion are mostly unknown. \nShe will discuss the impact of cellular senescence on cellular plasticity in the context of reprogramming and tissue regeneration\, with a particular focus on the heterogeneity of the senescence phenotype.

SUMMARY:Unpicking How the Tumor Microenvironment Sculpts Cancer Invasion and Therapy Failure
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Erik Sahai\, Ph.D. Principal Group Leader\, Assistant Research Director\, Tumour Cell Biology Laboratory\, The Francis Crick Institute\, London\, UK. \nThe spread of cancer from its site of origin and its ability to evolve resistance to therapy combine to make the disease highly lethal. We seek to understand these processes by using a combination of experiments\, computational modelling\, and analysis of clinical samples. To study the transition of cancer to invasive behaviour\, we have established a reductionist model of tumour stroma boundaries. These demonstrate that stromal fibroblasts can be invasion suppressing. Although the boundary is stable\, it breaks down in some places leading to the invasion of cancer cells. Intriguingly\, the location of the points of invasion can be related to the spatial organization of stromal fibroblasts near\, but not at\, the tumour stroma boundary. To understand the development of resistant disease\, we have set up a model to generate sub-clonal heterogeneity in lung tumours. This reveals a surprisingly strong influence of where subclones originate on their long-term fate. This effect is linked to cell migration dynamics and the composition of the tumour microenvironment. Altogether\, our analysis enables us to conclude that intra-epithelial dynamics and stromal fibroblasts sculpt clonal dynamics and therapy resistance.

Com sempre us animem a portar la vostra tassa\, plat o tàper. \nLa 31a edició de La Marató\, que se celebrarà el diumenge 18 de desembre\, estarà dedicada a la salut cardiovascular. Sota el lema ‘La Marató sempre batega’\, vol conscienciar i divulgar sobre les malalties cardiovasculars\, la principal causa de mort als països desenvolupats i un dels problemes actuals de salut pública més rellevants. \nUneix-te a l’equip\nSi t’interessa formar part de l’equip de PCBakers\, pots enviar una sol·licitud per unir-te a la llista de correu de Grups de Google.
