Este y otros desarrollos del mismo equipo de cient\u00edficos, liderado\u00a0por la investigadora ICREA\u00a0Dra. N\u00faria L\u00f3pez-Bigas, buscan acelerar la investigaci\u00f3n oncol\u00f3gica y ofrecer herramientas para que los onc\u00f3logos puedan elegir el mejor tratamiento para cada paciente. El trabajo se ha publicado en la revista Nature.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cada tumor, cada paciente, acumula un elevado n\u00famero de mutaciones, pero no todas esas mutaciones son significativas para el desarrollo del c\u00e1ncer. Cient\u00edficos del IRB Barcelona, liderados por la investigadora ICREA\u00a0<strong>Dra. N\u00faria L\u00f3pez-Bigas<\/strong>, han desarrollado una herramienta basada en m\u00e9todos de aprendizaje autom\u00e1tico que eval\u00faa la potencial contribuci\u00f3n al desarrollo y la progresi\u00f3n del c\u00e1ncer de todas las posibles mutaciones en un gen, en un determinado tipo de tumor.<\/p>\n<p>En trabajos anteriores, ya puestos a disposici\u00f3n de la comunidad cient\u00edfica y m\u00e9dica, el laboratorio hab\u00eda desarrollado un m\u00e9todo para identificar qu\u00e9 genes son responsables del inicio, el progreso o la expansi\u00f3n del c\u00e1ncer.\u00a0 \u201cBoostDM\u00a0va m\u00e1s all\u00e1: simula cada posible mutaci\u00f3n, dentro de cada gen, para un tipo de c\u00e1ncer espec\u00edfico y se\u00f1ala cu\u00e1les son clave en el proceso canceroso. Esto contribuye a entender c\u00f3mo se causa un tumor a nivel molecular, y puede ayudar en la toma de decisiones m\u00e9dicas en el momento de elegir la terapia m\u00e1s adecuada para un paciente\u201d, explica la<strong>\u00a0Dra. L\u00f3pez-Bigas<\/strong>, jefa del laboratorio de Biom\u00e9dica Gen\u00f3mica. Adem\u00e1s, la herramienta contribuir\u00e1 a entender mejor los procesos iniciales de la formaci\u00f3n de tumores en los distintos tejidos.<\/p>\n<p>La nueva herramienta se ha integrado en la plataforma\u00a0IntOGen, desarrollada por el mismo grupo y dise\u00f1ada para ser utilizada por la comunidad cient\u00edfica y m\u00e9dica en proyectos de investigaci\u00f3n, y en el\u00a0Cancer Genome Interpreter, tambi\u00e9n desarrollado por los investigadores, y m\u00e1s enfocado a la toma de decisiones cl\u00ednicas por parte de m\u00e9dicos onc\u00f3logos.<\/p>\n<p>Actualmente,\u00a0BoostDM\u00a0trabaja con los perfiles mutacionales de 28.000 genomas analizados de 66 tipos de c\u00e1ncer diferentes. El alcance de\u00a0BoostDM\u00a0ser\u00e1 mayor con el previsible incremento de genomas de c\u00e1ncer de acceso p\u00fablico.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Un desarrollo basado en la biolog\u00eda evolutiva<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Para hallar las mutaciones implicadas en el c\u00e1ncer, los cient\u00edficos se han basado en un concepto clave en la evoluci\u00f3n: la selecci\u00f3n positiva. Las mutaciones que favorecen el crecimiento y el desarrollo del c\u00e1ncer se encuentran en n\u00famero m\u00e1s elevado en las distintas muestras, en comparaci\u00f3n con aquellas mutaciones que suceder\u00edan al azar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPartimos de la premisa de que algunas mutaciones solo las llegamos a observar porque las c\u00e9lulas tumorales con dicha mutaci\u00f3n gu\u00edan el desarrollo del tumor, y nos preguntamos qu\u00e9 distingue a esas mutaciones del resto de mutaciones posibles\u201d, explica el\u00a0<strong>Dr. Ferran Mui\u00f1os<\/strong>, investigador postdoctoral y primer co-autor del trabajo. \u201cHacer esto de manera manual ser\u00eda excesivamente laborioso, pero hay estrategias computacionales que permiten organizar este an\u00e1lisis de manera sistem\u00e1tica y eficiente\u201d, a\u00f1ade.<\/p>\n<p>El m\u00e9todo propuesto aprende, a partir de los datos, qu\u00e9 atributos son distintivos de las mutaciones que favorecen el desarrollo del c\u00e1ncer, lo cual supone informaci\u00f3n \u00fatil para el desarrollo de nuevos enfoques terap\u00e9uticos.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00bb Art\u00edculo de referencia<\/strong>: \u00abIn silico saturation mutagenesis of cancer genes\u00bb.
