La membrana que envuelve la c\u00e9lula, aunque r\u00edgida e inextensible, soporta todas estas deformaciones utilizando un sistema, hasta ahora desconocido, que evita su ruptura.<\/p>\n<p>Investigadores del Institut de Bioenginyeria de Catalunya (IBEC), en colaboraci\u00f3n con el Instituto de Mecanobiolog\u00eda de Singapur y la Universidad Polit\u00e9cnica de Barcelona (UPC), han descubierto c\u00f3mo se produce este fen\u00f3meno, demostrando que cada vez que una c\u00e9lula se comprime o estira, forma o elimina peque\u00f1os pliegues en la membrana que evitan que se rasgue.<\/p>\n<p>Lo fascinante de este sistema es su simplicidad: durante a\u00f1os, multitud de grupos de investigaci\u00f3n en todo el mundo, han buscado complejos procesos bioqu\u00edmicos y moleculares para explicar c\u00f3mo se adapta la membrana. Este estudio, sin embargo, demuestra que aplicando las leyes de la f\u00edsica y la mec\u00e1nica, las c\u00e9lulas pueden adaptarse hasta extremos impensados.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDado los continuos cambios de forma celular que ocurren en los procesos cancer\u00edgenos o durante la cicatrizaci\u00f3n de las heridas, las implicaciones que tiene este hallazgo son muy relevantes\u201d, afirma Pere Roca-Cusachs, investigador principal del IBEC y profesor lector de la Universidad de Barcelona, que ha liderado el estudio. \u201cEl reto ahora es ver hasta qu\u00e9 punto esta nueva comprensi\u00f3n nos puede permitir interferir en la progresi\u00f3n de tumores, mejorar la regeneraci\u00f3n de tejidos, o solucionar problemas en enfermedades respiratorias y cardiovasculares\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPara realizar este estudio, hemos comprobado la adaptaci\u00f3n de las c\u00e9lulas despu\u00e9s de cambiar su \u00e1rea (estir\u00e1ndolas) y su volumen (introduciendo agua en su interior mediante un choque osm\u00f3tico)\u201d, explica Anita J.
