The PCB Community, a puzzle of nationalities with more young people and more women than men

Barcelona Science Park brings together a community of more than 2,900 professionals – among research, technical, entrepreneur and business staff- a total of 114 entities installed in their spaces, which focus their activity, mostly, in the health sector: pharmacy, biotechnology, medical devices, nutrition and cosmetics.

In the last 10 years, the Park community has grown by more than 1,400 people. All these professionals who live in the Parc come from 56 different nationalities: 80% of Spain, 11% from other countries in the European Union and 9% of the rest of the world. Italy tops the ranquin of workers of other nationalities, followed by India, France, Germany and United Kingdom.

A young community

The median age is 36 years (35 years, women and 38, men), with the population under 30 being the most important (36%). Only the 11% of the Park’s population is over 50 years old. 30% of the Park’s population is between 31 and 40 years old, while 24% are between 41 and 50 years old. In terms of gender perspective, the data indicate a very peer-to-peer representation (52% women and 48% men), that remains stable in recent years, albeit with a slight increase in men.

Still, the evolution of gender according to age between the public research sector and the rest of the Park’s activity (private research and other research support activities) has a very different behaviour.

In the public research sector, there’s a sharp decline in the presence of women as they become older, from 14% of the population of women under the age of 30 to 2% of 50-year-olds. The presence of men over 50 years old also decreases but not so abruptly, from 11% of men under the age of 30 to 3% of men over the age of 50.

In all other activities, the presence of women remains stable until the age of 50, representing between 6% and 7% of the population and decreasing to 2% in the more than 50-year-old range. On the other hand, the presence of men is quite equitable, with 6% and only falling to 4% in the band of more than 50 years.

PCB Team

The Barcelona Science Park closed last 2019 with 96 staff workers and a median age of 44 years old. The under 30 years old represent 8% of the staff, there’s a 23% staff members between 31 and 40 years old and a 28% staff over 50. The total of the Park census has been stable in the last years, regarding the training profile, the average age and the presence of women in the staff, which continues to be the majority.

Only the genre proportion has been lightly modified, increasing the masculine presence from 34% to 36%, continuing with a majority percentage of women in staff (64%) and a parity representation in responsibility charges.

The professional qualification of the PCB team is also very similar like previous years: on the first place, there are profiles with degrees, bachelor’s degree or diploma (52%), followed by training cycles, high school and others (34%) and finally, doctorate (14%).

On the other hand, it should also be noted that the Park exceeds the mandatory reserve quota for people with disabilities in compliance with the Law on Social Integration of the Disabled (LISMI). According to the balance with the year-end closing date, 2019, the number of people hired with disabilities is 3% of the staff, exceeding the minimum required by law by one percentage point.
