Exhibition in tribute to the ethologist Jordi Sabater Pi opens

“Sabater Pi. Drawings” is the title of an exhibition which pays tribute to the artistic work of the ethologist Jordi Sabater Pi, organized by the Llotja School of Art and Design in collaboration with the Parc Científic de Barcelona (Barcelona Science Park), the Universitat de Barcelona (UB, University of Barcelona), the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan Autonomous Government) and Barcelona City Council. The exhibition opened on May 30 in the Llotja Avinyó (Pl. Verònica, 2), and runs until June 30. Opening times are 17.00-21.00 Monday to Friday.

The opening was attended by Sabater Pi himself, as well as by other public figures including the Director General of the Parc Científic de Barcelona, Màrius Rubiralta, the Dean of the UB’s Psychology Faculty, Montserrat Freixa, and the Third Deputy Mayor of Barcelona and Councillor for Tourism, Jordi Portabella. The exhibition provides a general review of the work of Sabater Pi, never before shown to the general public, and constitutes an educational tool able to bring future illustrators into closer contact with the world of scientific illustration.

Born in Barcelona in 1922, Sabater Pi started studying ethology and anthropology whilst in Equatorial Guinea during the period 1940-1969 and was initially self-taught. It was here that he began the field work which would lead him to be considered a world authority on the study of primates in their natural habitat, as well as of amphibians. Upon returning to Barcelona he entered university to study psychology and in 1977 became a lecturer at the Universitat de Barcelona, helping to develop the study of ethology throughout Spain. Emeritus Professor at the UB since 1987, Sabater Pi has also been made doctor honoris causa by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Autonomous University of Barcelona) and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Autonomous University of Madrid), and has received the Catalan Research Foundation Award (1991), the Barcelona City Council Gold Medal for Scientific Achievement (1996), the Kyoto Award, the Sant Jordi Cross and Spain’s National Award for Geography, among many other awards.
