Nearly 300 professionals from around the world and the IBEC community had the opportunity to present their projects and share knowledge in an interdisciplinary scientific forum that is already an international reference in the sector.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gal\u00b7la Vinyes <\/strong>and<strong> Janet van der Graaf<\/strong>, researchers from IBEC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/es\/nanobioengineering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nanobioengineering<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/ca\/integrative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Integrative Cell and Tissue Dynamics<\/a>\u00a0groups respectively, were the masters of ceremonies for the symposium. The day began with a welcome from representatives of IBEC\u2019s founding institutions:<strong> Laia Arnal<\/strong>, director general for Knowledge Transfer and Society at the Department of Research and Universities of the Catalan Government; <strong>Jordi Llorca<\/strong>, vice-rector for Research at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC); <strong>Joan Gu\u00e0rdia<\/strong>, rector of the University of Barcelona (UB); and <strong>Josep Samitier<\/strong>, director of IBEC.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Samitier<\/strong> kicked off the series of talks with a presentation giving a comprehensive overview of IBEC\u2019s achievements over the past year and the future direction of the Institute, reaffirming its commitment to research excellence and biomedical innovation. Inspired by the popular \u2018Star Trek\u2019 series, <strong>Samitier<\/strong> said that IBEC is in a place for<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u2018exploring new and unknown worlds, searching for new forms of knowledge, until we reach places where no one has been before\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>During the event, the occasion was used to celebrate the fact that earlier this year IBEC received the Severo Ochoa Accreditation for Excellence for the third year in a row. The event was attended by <strong>N\u00faria Montserrat<\/strong>, IBEC\u2019s former director and now the Catalan Government\u2019s Minister for Research and Universities. <strong>Montserrat<\/strong> congratulated IBEC on this third award and quoted Severo Ochoa himself: \u2018Science is always worth doing because sooner or later the discoveries will have an application<strong>,\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0she said.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Biotechnology for New and Advanced Therapies<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This year there were four presentations by leading researchers in the field of biotechnology for new and advanced therapies.<\/p>\n<p>The first was <strong>Valentina Basoli<\/strong>, a researcher from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Basel (Switzerland), who presented the latest advances in bone and cartilage regeneration using 3D printing and the use of biosensors to monitor cell behaviour, as well as addressing the challenges of donor variability in regenerative treatments. She concluded his presentation by saying that \u201cthere is no innovation without collaboration between physicians, biologists and technologists\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pere Roca-Cusachs<\/strong>, deputy director of the Intramural Scientific Programme, then presented IBEC\u2019s Thematic Networks, an initiative to promote internal collaboration between the Institute\u2019s research groups.<\/p>\n<p>The next speaker was <strong>Twan Lammers<\/strong> from RWTH Aachen University (Germany), who outlined strategies to improve the performance and clinical translation of nanomedicine against cancer. Methods to optimise drug accumulation in tumours through image guidance and blood vessel modification were discussed, as well as the use of biomarkers to select the most appropriate patients.<\/p>\n<p>Next up was IBEC graduate and current production manager in the pharmaceutical industry, <strong>Veronica Hortig\u00fcela<\/strong>. During her presentation, she talked about her personal example: the journey from academia to the pharmaceutical company and gave some advice to people interested in making this leap into the industry. \u2018Technical skills developed through years of scientific research can open doors in the pharmaceutical industry. Soft skills will make the difference,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth and final presentation was given by <strong>Tae-Eun Park<\/strong>, a senior researcher in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the National Institute of Science and Technology in Ulsan, South Korea. Park presented a microphysiological system that mimics the blood-brain barrier to identify aptamers capable of efficiently crossing it. This technology facilitates the development of new drug delivery strategies to the brain and other organs.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Recognition for work done<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Four PhD students were honoured with Certificates of Doctoral Excellence: <strong>Celia Ximenes <\/strong>and <strong>Marina Mart\u00ednez<\/strong>, from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/es\/biomaterials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biomaterials for Regenerative Therapies<\/a>\u00a0group;<strong> Shubham Tanwar,<\/strong> from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/es\/nanobioelec\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nanoscale Bioelectrical Characterisation<\/a>\u00a0group; and <strong>Meritxell Serra<\/strong>, from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/es\/nanodevices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smart nano-bio-devices<\/a> group, who won the \u2018IBEC Doctoral Prize\u2019 in recognition of the best performance and achievements during her PhD studies at IBEC. Serra completed her thesis on \u2018Design and evaluation of enzyme-driven nanobots to cross biological barriers and treat cancer\u2019 under the supervision of <strong>Samuel S\u00e1nchez<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Another activity that has been part of the symposium since its inception, and which fosters links between researchers, is the poster session. Of the more than 100 posters presented, the best poster award went to <strong>Pau Guillama<\/strong>t, a postdoctoral researcher in the IBEC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/es\/integrative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Integrative Cell and Tissue Dynamics<\/a>\u00a0group led by <strong>Xavier Trepat<\/strong>, for her poster on \u201cGuidance of cellular nematics into self-shaping active surfaces\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This year, in addition to the poster session, a special outreach activity was organised for secondary school students as part of IBEC\u2019s efforts to bring bioengineering closer to the community. Around 20 researchers came to the session in advance and presented their scientific poster, adapting the explanation to the young students, who had the opportunity to vote for their favourite. The \u2018Best Dissemination Award\u2019 went to <strong>David Bartolom\u00e9 Catal\u00e0<\/strong>, a researcher in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/es\/biomsyscelleng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biomimetic Systems for Cell Engineering<\/a>\u00a0group led by <strong>Elena Mart\u00ednez<\/strong>. His poster was on \u2018Designing\u00a0<em>in vitro<\/em>\u00a0platforms to study transendothelial T cell migration in colorectal cancer \u2018.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <strong>Karolina Zimkoswka<\/strong>, a pre-doctoral researcher in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/es\/neurobiotechnology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Molecular and Cellular Neurobiotechnology<\/a> group led by <strong>Jos\u00e9 Antonio del R\u00edo<\/strong>, won the \u2018Best Quick Presentation Award\u2019. The Quick Presentations give IBEC scientists the opportunity to explain their research to the public in 5 minutes.
