The funding will help him take his research a step further and use organic and biocompatible materials to develop his nanorobots, which will be used as drug carriers to treat bladder cancer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The pioneering research of S\u00e1nchez, who heads the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/es\/nanodevices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smart Nano-bio-devices<\/a> group at IBEC, has led him to develop a silica nanoparticle capable of penetrating the bladder tumour and activating the therapeutic agent there, reducing the size of the neoplasm by 90%.<\/p>\n<p>With this Leonardo project, entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redleonardo.es\/beneficiario\/samuel-sanchez-ordonez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Organic enzymatic nanorobots for\u00a0<em>in vivo<\/em>\u00a0visualisation with photoacoustic imaging techniques\u2019<\/a>, he aims to go one step further: to develop nanorobots with organic materials that are biocompatible \u2013 i.e. do not damage healthy cells \u2013 and that biodegrade once the drug has been administered to facilitate its elimination. In addition, non-invasive photoacoustic techniques would be used to monitor the progress of the nanomedicine in real time. This would greatly expand the range of cancers and other diseases that can be treated by nanorobotics.<\/p>\n<p>The technology behind these nanorobots, which Samuel S\u00e1nchez and his team have been working on for more than seven years, has already been patented and is the basis of Nanobots Therapeutics, an IBEC and ICREA spin-off founded in January 2023. S\u00e1nchez\u2019s team also has other lines of research with enzyme-powered nanorobots for the treatment of joint diseases such as arthritis.<\/p>\n<p>Launched in 2014, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redleonardo.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leonardo Grants for Scientific Research and Cultural Creation<\/a> are an initiative of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbbva.es\/\">BBVA Foundation<\/a>\u00a0that aims to support researchers and creators aged between 30 and 45 who are at a decisive moment in their careers: an intermediate stage in which they can develop and manage a personal project with the greatest flexibility.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redleonardo.es\/noticias\/adjudicadas-becas-leonardo-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this 2024 edition<\/a>, 57 projects have been selected from the 1,423 applications submitted, representing a success rate of 4%, an indicator of the high competitiveness of the call.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00bb For further information <a href=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/researcher-samuel-sanchez-awarded-a-leonardo-grant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IBEC website [+]<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Samuel S\u00e1nchez, principal investigator at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), based in the Barcelona Science Park, has received a Leonardo Grant from the BBVA Foundation.
