The research has been carried out with the participation of\u00a0 the Institute of Molecular Biology of Barcelona\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/empresa\/institut-de-biologia-molecular-de-barcelona-ibmb-csic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IBMB-CSIC<\/a>), based in the Barcelona Science Park.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Until now, previous studies had determined that this hormone was related to the course of the disease, but this new research finds that knowing the variation of its concentration in blood can contribute to the decrease in mortality. The research, led by <strong>Dr. Rosanna Paciucci<\/strong>, principal investigator of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.vhir.org\/portal1\/grup-presentacio.asp?s=recerca&amp;contentid=212955&amp;idrefer=212956\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clinical Biochemistry<\/a> group at VHIR, has been carried out with the participation of <strong>Dr. M\u00f3nica Mart\u00ednez Gallo<\/strong> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.vhir.org\/portal1\/grup-equip.asp?s=recerca&amp;contentid=187051\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Translational Immunology<\/a> group at VHIR and <strong>Dr. Timothy Thomson<\/strong>, Senior Research Scientist CSIC and Principal investigator of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibmb.csic.es\/en\/department-of-cell-biology-dcb\/cell-signalling-ubiquitin-and-cancer\/#lab-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cell signalling, ubiquitin and cancer<\/a> group at\u00a0the Institute of Molecular Biology of Barcelona (IBMB-CSIC). Researchers from other groups at VHIR and Universitat Aut\u00f2noma de Barcelona (UAB) have also participated.<\/p>\n<p>A precise understanding of the molecular and biological mechanisms that may explain the association of severe COVID-19 with male sex is still lacking. The study has found significant quantitative differences in biomarkers predictive of severity in male patients compared to female patients.<\/p>\n<p>Although men and women present a similar risk of contracting the disease, men more frequently develop severe disease.
