{"id":69257,"date":"2021-12-09T16:02:54","date_gmt":"2021-12-09T15:02:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/irb-barcelona-opens-a-new-laboratory-to-study-the-link-between-inflammation-and-cancer\/"},"modified":"2021-12-14T13:18:51","modified_gmt":"2021-12-14T12:18:51","slug":"irb-barcelona-opens-a-new-laboratory-to-study-the-link-between-inflammation-and-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/irb-barcelona-opens-a-new-laboratory-to-study-the-link-between-inflammation-and-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"IRB Barcelona opens a new laboratory to study the link between inflammation and cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The scientist\u00a0Dr. Direna Alonso-Curbelo\u00a0(1984, Gran Canaria), who has a promising career in cancer research, has joined<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/empresa\/institut-de-recerca-biomedica-irb-barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> IRB Barcelona<\/a> to head the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irbbarcelona.org\/en\/research\/inflammation-tissue-plasticity-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inflammation, Tissue Plasticity &amp; Cancer<\/a> laboratory, the third to be set up in the last 12 months. With the addition of this laboratory, the center now has 27 in operation\u00a0and eight core facilities address basic questions in biology and are orientated to diseases such as cancer, metastasis, Alzheimer\u2019s, diabetes, and rare conditions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This new research group will study the interaction between genetic mutations and inflammation to decipher how they alter the normal identity of cells and their environment to foster cancer, and aims to identify novel targets for its earlier detection and treatment. The group will focus its research efforts on pancreatic and liver cancers, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Inflammation is a common phenomenon: when our tissues are damaged (due to a wound, or the presence of a toxin for example), cells from the immune system flood into the site to repair the lesion and remove damaged cells. However, if the inflammation occurs in tissues harbouring cells with oncogenic potential or is maintained over time, it can facilitate tumour growth and spread.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInflammation can be good or bad, and understanding the differences between these two types can point us towards new therapeutic strategies that may change the treatment paradigm of inflammation-driven cancers,\u201d\u00a0<strong>Dr. Alonso-Curbelo<\/strong>\u00a0explains. \u201cCancer is often referred to as a wound that never heals, so understanding how precancerous and cancerous cells hijack physiological inflammatory responses is key for the identification of early disease biomarkers and drivers, and strategies to reactivate the immune system to fight it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The laboratory, which was set up with support from \u201dLa Caixa\u201d\u00a0 Foundation and FERO-ASEICA, will also focus on the initial stages of cancer. \u201cUnderstanding how normal cells turn cancerous and the initial stages of this process is crucial for its early detection and interception,\u201d says Dr. Alonso-Curbelo.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Dr. Direna Alonso-Curbelo&#8217;s career path<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Dr. Alonso-Curbelo\u00a0<\/strong>studied Pharmacy at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and did her PhD studies, focused on melanoma, in\u00a0<strong>Dr. Marisol Soengas<\/strong>&#8216; laboratory at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncol\u00f3gicas, CNIO). During her doctoral studies, she did two short-stays, one at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands) and the other at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC, in New York, US), in the laboratories of\u00a0<strong>Drs. Reuven Agami<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Johanna Joyce<\/strong>, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>From the end of 2013 until autumn 2021, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher in\u00a0<strong>Dr. Scott W. Lowe<\/strong>&#8216;s laboratory at MSKCC, where she developed innovative experimental models to study the link between the tumour and its microenvironment, with the goal of identifying mechanisms that promote tumour development and block immune surveillance. During her predoc and postdoc training,\u00a0<strong>Dr. Alonso-Curbelo<\/strong>\u00a0has published 19 scientific articles. Her latest\u00a0<a class=\"elf-external elf-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-020-03147-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">study<\/a>, published in February 2021 in the journal\u00a0<em>Nature<\/em>, defined how genetic mutations and tissue damage cooperate to initiate pancreatic cancer, and uncovered a large number of alterations in the way cells package their DNA (epigenetic alterations) that are acquired early on during tumour development and distinguish this process from physiological wound healing responses.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to her scientific production,\u00a0<strong>Dr. Alonso-Curbelo<\/strong>\u00a0has participated in various activities to bring science closer to society and also tackle cultural and gender diversity issues in Academia.<\/p>\n<p>On September 25,\u00a0<strong>Dr. Alonso-Curbelo<\/strong> received the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aseica.es\/anunciada-la-ii-ayuda-fero-aseica-a-la-investigacion-a-un-proyecto-en-cancer-de-pancreas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2nd FERO-ASEICA Award<\/a>. The grant will cover \u20ac 80,000 for the cancer research project that will carry out at IRB Barcelona. In September this year,<strong> she <\/strong>also received the prestigious <a class=\"elf-external elf-icon\" href=\"http:\/\/blavatnikawards.org\/honorees\/profile\/direna-alonso-curbelo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">2021 Blavatnik Regional Award<\/a>\u00a0for young scientists in the \u201cLife Sciences\u201d category.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>IRB Barcelona&#8217;s commitment to young leadership<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>So far this year, the Institute has appointed three junior group leaders, reflecting its firm commitment to young talent. In this regard, Dr. Alonso-Curbelo is accompanied by newcomers\u00a0<strong>Dr. Cristina Mayor-Ruiz<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Dr. Alejo Rodr\u00edguez-Fraticelli<\/strong>, also young talented scientists who have recently set up their own groups.
