{"id":64360,"date":"2021-06-08T10:29:25","date_gmt":"2021-06-08T09:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/dr-eduard-batlle-receives-the-rei-jaume-i-prize\/"},"modified":"2021-07-01T13:53:16","modified_gmt":"2021-07-01T12:53:16","slug":"dr-eduard-batlle-receives-the-rei-jaume-i-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/dr-eduard-batlle-receives-the-rei-jaume-i-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Eduard Batlle receives the Rei Jaume I Prize for Medical Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>On Tuesday 8 June, ICREA researcher Dr. Eduard Batlle, head of the Colorectal Cancer Lab at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/empresa\/institut-de-recerca-biomedica-irb-barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IRB Barcelona<\/a>) in the Barcelona Science Park, and group leader at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciberonc.es\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CIBERONC<\/a>, received the Rei Jaume I Prize for Medical Research. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fprj.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rei Jaume I Prizes<\/a> -which are given each year- acknowledge people who have carried out highly significant work which has mostly been undertaken in Spain, and awardees are presented with a gold medal and \u20ac100,000.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irbbarcelona.org\/en\/research\/colorectal-cancer-laboratory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colorectal Cancer Lab<\/a>, <\/strong> led by <strong>Dr. Eduard Batlle<\/strong>, studies cancer from two perspectives, namely the evolution of cancer stem cells, and the interaction of these cells with the environment during the progression of the disease. Specifically, it seeks to reveal how these aspects facilitate the development of metastases. This group recently discovered a mechanism involved in absence of the immune system at the centre of the tumour, which is responsible for the poor response to treatments aimed at enhancing the eradication of tumours through patients\u2019 immune systems.
