Expected to be developed over two years, the project has been awarded \u20ac180,000 of funding.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their lifetime.\u00a0 Several treatments for this type of cancer are currently available, but the tumour develops resistance and the effectiveness of therapy is reduced.<\/p>\n<p>Current therapies to treat prostate cancer are based on blocking a protein called androgen receptor, which stimulates tumour proliferation. However, the androgen receptor often loses a fragment, precisely the one that the drug binds to and that allows it to exert its action. Without that fragment, the drug does not &#8220;find&#8221; the receptor, it cannot exert its action, and the cancer continues to develop.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Xavier Salvatella&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irbbarcelona.org\/en\/research\/laboratory-of-molecular-biophysics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics <\/a>at IRB Barcelona receives \u20ac180,000 to develop new drugs against prostate cancer from the\u00a0Spanish Association Against Cancer\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aecc.es\/es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AECC<\/a>) in the the AECC Innova call,\u00a0 focused on technology transfer and aim to get research results to the patient faster. The team behind the project is formed by\u00a0Mateusz Biesaga\u00a0(PhD student),\u00a0Paula Mart\u00ednez-Crist\u00f3bal\u00a0(postdoctoral researcher),\u00a0Israel Ramos\u00a0\u00a0(Drug discovery expert) and\u00a0Salvatella\u00a0himself, principal researcher of the project.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are exploring drugs that can attack the new form of the androgen receptor when it has already detached from this fragment.
