{"id":57576,"date":"2021-01-25T15:22:57","date_gmt":"2021-01-25T14:22:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/ibec-researchers-develop-enzyme-powered-micromotors-based-on-metal-organic-porous-materials\/"},"modified":"2021-07-01T15:59:32","modified_gmt":"2021-07-01T14:59:32","slug":"ibec-researchers-develop-enzyme-powered-micromotors-based-on-metal-organic-porous-materials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/ibec-researchers-develop-enzyme-powered-micromotors-based-on-metal-organic-porous-materials\/","title":{"rendered":"IBEC researchers develop enzyme-powered micromotors based on metal-organic porous materials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In a new article, published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, researchers from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/empresa\/institut-de-bioenginyeria-de-catalunya-ibec\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) <\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/icn2.cat\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2)<\/a> describe how they successfully designed and fabricated bubble-propelled enzymatic micromotors built from a highly porous metal-organic framework (MOF). These innovative devices might lead to applications for drug delivery, and adsorption of pollutants.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Micromotors are miniature vehicles that are expected to revolutionise the fields of biomedicine and environmental\u00a0quality control and\u00a0remediation. A range of promising applications are currently being explored for these tiny devices, which are characterised by their ability to self-propel. From targeted drug delivery to microsurgery and more, micromotors have\u00a0even\u00a0the potential to be used to clean up contaminants from the environment. Over the past decade, scientists around the world have been investigating different bioinspired designs and biocompatible materials for safe and efficient micromotors.<\/p>\n<p>In a paper recently published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, researchers describe how they built enzyme-powered micromotors from tiny metal-organic framework crystals. Their cutting-edge devices have pores of different sizes that allow them to encapsulate enzyme \u201cengines\u201d in the mesopores, as well as other smaller target substances in the micropores, such as environmental contaminants. This work was co-led by Dr Tania Pati\u00f1o (Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia and University of Rome) and Dr Vincent Guillerm (Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, ICN2 and KAUST) within the framework of a <a href=\"https:\/\/bist.eu\/research\/ignite\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BIST Ignite Programme<\/a>. It was conducted in collaboration with Dr. Samuel S\u00e1nchez, ICREA Research Professor and Leader of the Smart Nano-Bio-Devices Group at the IBEC, researchers Xavier Arqu\u00e9 (co-first author) and Pascal-Raphael Blersch from IBEC, ICREA Research Prof. Daniel Maspoch, leader of the ICN2 Supramolecular NanoChemistry and Materials group, as well as Yunhui Yang (co-first author), Dr Javier P\u00e9rez-Carvajal and Dr. Inhar Imaz from the ICN2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese new micromotors from metal-organic framework crystals can be loaded with enzymes that act as engines, but they also have free cargo space that could be used to deliver drugs or to remove contaminants from the environment\u201d, explains Dr Tania Pati\u00f1o.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur joint efforts to merge fundamental and advanced knowledge in both porous materials design and self-propelled micromotors have enabled a significant step forward towards applications\u201d, says Dr Vincent Guillerm.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Enzyme-powered micromotors based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To build these new micromotors, IBEC and ICN2\u2019s researchers used a type of tiny porous crystal structures known as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The fact that these MOFs have micropores makes them particularly attractive as micromotor chassis, since the pores can act as cargo space. However, any functional vehicle also needs space for the engine. In this case, a process known as ozonolysis was used to create bigger cavities in the crystals: mesopores wide enough for enzyme \u201cengines\u201d to fit inside.<\/p>\n<p>These new micromotors, dubbed \u201cMOFtors\u201d by the authors of this work, are powered by an enzyme called catalase. Its role in organisms is to convert hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen gas. Therefore, when hydrogen peroxide \u201cfuel\u201d was added to the\u00a0MOFtors, the oxygen bubbles created by the reaction were expelled from the pores, generating jet-like propulsion. In addition, these prototypes exhibited high fuel efficiency.
