{"id":56585,"date":"2020-12-01T17:49:55","date_gmt":"2020-12-01T16:49:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/ibec-research-nuria-montserrat-joins-european-molecular-biology-organization\/"},"modified":"2021-07-05T12:40:39","modified_gmt":"2021-07-05T11:40:39","slug":"ibec-research-nuria-montserrat-joins-european-molecular-biology-organization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/ibec-research-nuria-montserrat-joins-european-molecular-biology-organization\/","title":{"rendered":"IBEC researcher Nuria Montserrat joins EMBO through the Young Investigator Programme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The European Molecular Biology Organization (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.embo.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EMBO<\/a>) announced today the names of the 30 researchers who will join the prestigious organization as a \u201cYoung Investigators\u201d.\u00a0Nuria Montserrat, ICREA Research Professor\u00a0and leader of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibecbarcelona.eu\/ipscs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pluripotency for organ regeneration<\/a>\u00a0group at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/empresa\/institut-de-bioenginyeria-de-catalunya-ibec\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IBEC<\/a>\u00a0in the Barcelona Science Park, has been elected, among\u00a0other\u00a0216 candidates, as an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.embo.org\/members.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EMBO member<\/a><em>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nuria Montserrat becomes EMBO member through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embo.org\/funding-awards\/young-investigators.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Young Investigator Programme<\/a> and will join of two other group leaders at IBEC who are members of EMBO: Xavier Trepat, who is member since 2018, and Pere Roca-Cusachs who was accepted in 2016 in the EMBO Young Investigator Programme and became full member in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The new EMBO Young Investigators will receive financial and practical support for a period of four years, starting in January 2021\u00a0and they will\u00a0benefit from a variety of networking opportunities,\u00a0mentoring by EMBO Members, training in research leadership and management and access to core facilities of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EMBL<\/a>) in Heidelberg, Germany.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Nuria Montserrat, Cutting-edge research in organoids\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While at the Center of Regenerative Medicine in Barcelona (CMRB), Dr. Montserrat was part of a team including researchers from Barcelona\u2019s Hospital Clinic and led by Dr. Juan Carlos Izpisua from the Salk Institute in California who announced the first-ever creation of chimeric 3D \u201cmini-kidneys\u201d from human pluripotent stem cells in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, Dr. Montserrat was one of just eight young researchers in Catalonia who received a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant, to generate fundamental knowledge and technological advances to regenerate the mammalian kidney. In 2015, Nuria Montserrat joined IBEC as a Group Leader.
