The biotech company\u00a0<\/strong><strong>has just received \u2013jointly with the\u00a0Centre for Genomic Regulation\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.crg.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CRG<\/a>) and the\u00a0Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imim.es\/en_index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IMIM<\/a>)\u2013 a grant for\u00a0\u20ac1.97 million\u00a0from the Spanish National Innovation Agency to develop an innovative treatment for fragile X syndrome (FXS),\u00a0the most common form of hereditary intellectual disability.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The grant earned by this public-private consortium comes from the call <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciencia.gob.es\/portal\/site\/MICINN\/menuitem.dbc68b34d11ccbd5d52ffeb801432ea0\/?vgnextoid=9214d1072606c610VgnVCM1000001d04140aRCRD&amp;lang_choosen=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Collaboration Challenges&#8221; R&amp;D Projects 2019<\/a> \u2013within the framework of the\u00a0Spanish State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation\u2013 and aims to co-finance the development of the Connecta Therapeutics <a href=\"https:\/\/connectatherapeutics.com\/rd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CTH120<\/a> \u00a0molecule for fragile X syndrome (FXS) up to the start of the phase I clinical trial (scheduled for early 2022).<\/p>\n<p>FXS is a hereditary genetic disorder linked to the X chromosome that causes intellectual disability and emotional and social problems, such as hyperactivity, anxiety, aggressive behaviours, and autism. According to Dr Josep Prous, the biotech\u2019s co-founder and CSO, \u00a0\u201cCTH120\u00a0is a first-in-class drug that will be able to address the disease based on an innovative strategy\u00a0it is capable of modulating neuroplasticity, targeting the pathophysiological origin of fragile X syndrome\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In the first phase, the Cellular Neurobiology and Integrated Systems group in the Systems Biology programme of the CRG led by Dr Mara Dierssen will conduct complementary pharmacology studies on Connecta Therapeutics CTH120 molecule. Dr Dierssen highlights the synergies between Connecta, the CRG and the IMIM: \u201cThis project brings together a multidisciplinary team of scientists and entrepreneurs with in-depth knowledge and experience in the neuropharmacology of intellectual disability with the goal of attaining a real scientific breakthrough to respond to the challenges society faces\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Later, the IMIM coordinated by Dr Rafael de la Torre, director of the Neuroscience Research Programme and leader of the Integrative Pharmacology and Systems Neuroscience Research group, will start the Phase I clinical trial (expected for early 2022). \u201cFXS is the leading cause of hereditary intellectual disability. Although there are different degrees of severity, the impact of the diagnosis causes a profound crisis in families\u201d he comments.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>New therapeutic targets\u00a0for\u00a0central nervous system diseases<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/connectatherapeutics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connecta Therapeutics<\/a> was founded in 2019 by <a href=\"https:\/\/prousresearch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prous Institute for Biomedical Research<\/a>, Josep Prous, David Prous and Jordi F\u00e0brega to develop new treatments for unmet medical needs involving the central nervous system.<\/p>\n<p>The biotechnology company is initially focused on developing the CTH120 molecule, a first-in-class drug to treat fragile X s\u00edndrome. CTH120 was designed after the study of more than 30 molecular and cellular targets for neuroplasticity. The molecule has been proven, in in vitro tests and in vivo in animal models, to be an excellent neuroplasticity modulator with a great extension profile for other neurodevelopmental disorders (Rett syndrome, Down syndrome and autism spectrum disorders, among others).<\/p>\n<p>At the end of September 2020, Connecta Therapeutics closed a 1.7 million Euro round of investment led by the venture capital company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/inveready.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Inveready<\/a>. The round also featured the \u00a0Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdti.es\/index.asp?MP=14&amp;MS=59&amp;MN=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CDTI<\/a>) \u2013through its Innvierte programme\u2013 and the company\u2019s co-founders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the opening of our headquarters in the Barcelona Science Park, the project is established in an ideal ecosystem due to its progress, close to research, innovation centers and startups like us.
