Nuria Montserrat, ICREA research professor and principal investigator at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/empresa\/institut-de-bioenginyeria-de-catalunya-ibec\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC)<\/a>, based in the Barcelona Science Park, was awarded in this edition with the\u00a0<\/strong><strong>for her study of SARS-CoV-2 through the use of human organoids created with bioengineering techniques.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">The awards ceremony took place at the Palacio de Neptuno in Madrid and it has been led by the initiative\u2019s ambassador and moderator of La Sexta TV, Mamen Mendiz\u00e1bal. Olga S\u00e1nchez, president of the AXA Foundation, handed the award to Nuria Montserrat. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">Francisco Mart\u00ednez Mojica has been also awarded for his career, the AECC for the best communication campaign in medical prevention, and the cardiologist Borja Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez received the \u2018Young Talent\u2019 Award.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_56333\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56333\" class=\"wp-image-56334 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/fullsizeoutput_397-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/fullsizeoutput_397-2.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/fullsizeoutput_397-2-300x110.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/fullsizeoutput_397-2-768x282.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-56333\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo of the winners in the VI edition of the Constantes y Vitales Awards (Credit: Constantes y Vitales)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">The event has been supported by Pedro Duque, Minister of Science and Innovation; Antonio Zapatero, Deputy Minister of Health of the Community of Madrid, the highest representatives of Atresmedia and Fundaci\u00f3n AXA, and other well-renowned scientists.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Bioengineering organoids to study SARS-CoV-2, a major milestone in 2020<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Nuria Montserrat Pluripotency for organ regeneration group at IBEC made an important breakthrough last April 2020, in a collaboration with other international research centres, such as the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology of Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Life Sciences Institute (LSI) at the British Columbia University, by using for the first time laboratory organoids to study SARS-CoV-2 virus.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers demonstrated that renal organoids contained groups of cells that expressed a cell receptor called ACE2 in a similar way to the one seen in native tissue, and proceeded to infect organoids with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Once they obtained the infected mini-kidneys, they applied different drugs to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infections and reduced their viral load. Through these studies, IBEC researchers helped identify a clinical phase drug that blocked the effects of SARS-CoV-2 virus.<\/p>\n<p>The work was published in Cell Journal.
