The scientists\u00a0Ra\u00fal\u00a0M\u00e9ndez, head of the\u00a0Translational Control of Cell Cycle and Differentiation\u00a0<\/a>laboratory\u00a0at IRB Barcelona, and\u00a0Jos\u00e9 J. Lucas, at\u00a0CBMSO were addressing the influence of CPEB proteins in Huntington\u2019s disease when they discovered that these proteins orchestrate the genome, which regulates the activity of thousands of genes.<\/p>\n

CPEB proteins determine whether these genes are activated or silenced at the correct time during embryonic development. The scientists observed that in mouse models of Huntington\u2019s disease, the alteration in CPEBs affected the genes associated with predisposition to autism.<\/p>\n

Both researchers believe that a strategy to restore CPEB4 activity in the brains of those affected would improve the treatment of autism spectrum disorder.\u00a0 This study is a clear example of the tight association between\u00a0basic biomedicine research\u00a0and our knowledge of diseases.<\/p>\n

Published in the journal\u00a0Nature<\/a>,\u00a0the study concludes that a defect in CPEB4 could be the link between environmental factors that alter brain development and the genes that determine susceptibility to autism.<\/p>\n

9th \u201cVanguardia de la Ciencia\u201d Award<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The \u201cVanguardia de la Ciencia\u201d Award, a joint initiative of the\u00a0La Vanguardia newspaper\u00a0and the Fundaci\u00f3 Catalunya-La Pedrera, seeks to increase the visibility of scientists conducting frontier research and bring this research closer to society. Candidate selection has been based on two criteria, namely the excellence of the research and that this research has been headed by a Spanish institution.<\/p>\n

Research in the fields of physics, chemistry and social science selected by an interdisciplinary scientific committee has also been nominated.<\/p>\n
