In meiosis, a precursor cell \u2014primordial germ cell\u2014 produces four spermatozoids during spermatogenesis, while only one oocyte is formed during oogenesis (the other three cells die during the process).<\/p>\n<p>In this study, scientists has reported that the protein\u00a0RingoA\u00a0is a key regulator of meiosis\u2014the cell division process that gives rise to ovules and sperm for sexual reproduction in mammals.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast to the cells in the rest of the body, sex cells hold half the number of chromosomes (they are haploid) as a result of this special kind of cell division. In meiosis, a precursor cell \u2014primordial germ cell\u2014 produces four spermatozoids during spermatogenesis, while only one oocyte is formed during oogenesis (the other three cells die during the process).<\/p>\n<p>Mice deficient in RingoA, generated in Nebreda\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irbbarcelona.org\/en\/research\/signalling-and-cell-cycle-laboratory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Signalling and Cell Cycling Laboratory<\/a>, are apparently healthy but both sexes are completely sterile. After three years of experiments, IRB Barcelona postdoctoral researchers\u00a0Petra Mikolcevic\u00a0and\u00a0Michitaka Isoda\u00a0describe the molecular imbalances that occur during meiosis as a result of the absence of this protein.<\/p>\n<p>Amb l\u2019estudi, els investigadors aporten noves dades sobre un proc\u00e9s fonamental per a totes les formes de vida que es reprodueixen sexualment.\u00a0&#8220;Tots vam comen\u00e7ar amb una meiosi aix\u00ed que saber com funciona \u00e9s intel\u00b7lectualment molt interessant&#8221;, apunta\u00a0Nebreda. Tot i que la meiosi es va descriure a la fi del segle XIX &#8220;queden molts interrogants oberts&#8221;, explica aquest cient\u00edfic guardonat amb un projecte de\u00a0l&#8217;European Research Council.<\/p>\n<p>This study sheds new light on a key process for all forms of life that engage in sexual reproduction. \u201cWe all start life through meiosis so understanding how this process works is intellectually interesting,\u201d saysNebreda. Although meiosis was first described in the late 19th century, \u201cmany questions remain unanswered,\u201d explains this scientist, holder of a European Research Council grant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are no good\u00a0in vitro\u00a0models available to study meiosis. It is difficult to extract spermatocytes and to perform studies in plates; they have to be studied in the testicles.
