Felip Miralles, director of the eHealth Unit at\u00a0Eurecat<\/a>, kicked off the session by explaining that transfer has three stages: identifying new technology, protection (patents) and the development and marketing strategy. Miralles recommended companies do\u00a0proof of concept\u00a0as it helps \u201ccut costs and demonstrate the financial feasibility\u00a0of the project.\u201d The Eurecat technology center is currently leading more than one hundred projects like\u00a0Nextcare<\/a>\u00a0for multidisciplinary technology transfer in personalized medicine, funded through the\u00a0RIS3CAT healthcare community coordinated by Biocat.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve learned that TT doesn\u2019t just come about by chance, it is a multi-stage, multidisciplinary, multi-directional process,\u201d explained\u00a0Francisco Moreno, director of Science and Technology Transfer at the\u00a0Bot\u00edn Foundation<\/a>. This organization has been working in technology transfer for over 20 years. Moreno believes innovation is the responsibility of companies, not research centers which have to generate the knowledge, and that \u201cimplementing management procedures and metrics helps assess progress.\u201d
\n\u00a0<\/p>\n

The business point of view<\/strong><\/p>\n

For industry, it is clear: innovation has to come before the patent.\u00a0Carlos Plata, CSO and CMO of\u00a0Esteve<\/a>\u00a0with more than 20 years working in countries like the United States and Japan, recommends companies establish a\u00a0long-term patent strategy: \u201cAny strategy is valid, but it must be personalized to fit the company\u2019s specific goals.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also spoke about\u00a0sharing profits and risks. \u201cThe aims, motivations and interests of both parties must remain clear in order to create a successful dynamic,\u201d explained Plata. But without a\u00a0key interlocutor\u00a0it won\u2019t go anywhere, \u201cYou can only come up with a successful model if you have the right people.\u201d Francisco Moreno of the Bot\u00edn Foundation had the same experience, adding, \u201cIt must be a relationship based on trust, growing over time and taking into account that many times the academic world can\u2019t meet industry timelines and needs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eight years ago, Esteve designed its R&D strategy and one of its key decisions was to move the R&D center to the PCB, where there are 80 researchers working, to take advantage of the synergies there. The company\u2019s TT models are public-private partnerships, research consortia and strategic joint units with universities.
\n\u00a0<\/p>\n

CaixaImpulse program<\/strong><\/p>\n

To finish off the session,\u00a0Caixa Capital Risc<\/a>\u00a0Project and Program Manager\u00a0Gemma Torruella\u00a0highlighted that from the investor\u2019s point of view, \u201cIf you want to transfer, the sooner the better.\u201d Caixa Capital Risc, with the “la Caixa” Foundation, has set up the\u00a0CaixaImpulse program<\/a>\u00a0to promote transfer and valorization from public hospitals, universities and research centers. So far, \u20ac3.4 millions have been invested in 35 projects. \u201cOur focus isn\u2019t on the person, it\u2019s on the project. Our aim isn\u2019t to create entrepreneurs,\u201d Torruella clarified, \u201cit is important to be all the decision-makers involved because the decisions are transformative.\u201d<\/p>\n
