{"id":50212,"date":"2019-11-14T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-11-13T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/salvador-aznar-benitah-receives-the-premio-fundacion-carmen-y-severo-ochoa-2019\/"},"modified":"2020-11-18T15:27:12","modified_gmt":"2020-11-18T14:27:12","slug":"salvador-aznar-benitah-receives-the-premio-fundacion-carmen-y-severo-ochoa-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/salvador-aznar-benitah-receives-the-premio-fundacion-carmen-y-severo-ochoa-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Salvador Aznar Benitah receives the \u201cPremio Fundaci\u00f3n Carmen y Severo Ochoa 2019\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The ICREA researcher Salvador Aznar Benitah, head of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irbbarcelona.org\/en\/research\/stem-cells-and-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stem Cells and Cancer Laboratory<\/a> at IRB Barcelona, has received the \u201cPremio Carmen y Severo Ochoa de Investigaci\u00f3n Biom\u00e9dica\u201d in recognition of the important scientific achievements that he has made in the last 5 years.<\/p>\n<p>On 16 October, the jury of the XXVth award of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carmenyseverochoa.es\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fundaci\u00f3n Carmen y Severo Ochoa<\/a> unanimously voted for Aznar Benitah to receive the accolade in acknowledgement of his research on the characterisation of the molecular pathways that regulate the temporal behaviour of adult stem cells, which are linked to our circadian rhythms.<\/p>\n<p>This finding has shed light on how many of the functions of stem cells (differentiation, division and metabolic activity) are regulated, as well as their alterations (aging and cancer). Aznar Benitah has recently identified the cells that give rise to metastasis and determined how dietary fat affects this process.<\/p>\n<p>The jury also acknowledged \u201cDr. Aznar\u2019s efforts to transfer knowledge for the development of business initiatives\u201d. This year Aznar Benitah, together with researcher Valerie Vanhooren, IRB Barcelona and ICREA, launched the spin-off Ona Therapeutics, which seeks to develop a new drug for the treatment of metastatic cancer.\u201c The company is located in the Barcelona Science Park.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cPremio Carmen y Severo Ochoa\u201d is particularly special; you only have to take a look at the list of former awardees, all of them with an incredible career and who do first-rate science. It\u00b4s an honour for me to join this group,\u201d said the researcher.<\/p>\n<p>Aznar Benitah occupies position 25 in the list of prestigious scientists\u2014a list that started in 1994 with Juan Modolell, who was followed by others such as IRB Barcelona researchers Manuel Serrano and Eduard Batlle.
