Since it was founded in 2015, IRB Barcelona has hosted\u00a0350 PhD students from around the world, 100 of whom are currently working towards their theses. IRB Barcelona provides all-round scientific training, which includes the supervision of theses by renowned scientists, participation in cutting-edge projects, access to state-of-the-art equipment, seminars and workshops that cover subjects ranging from technology transfer and communications, to training in emerging lab techniques.<\/p>\n<p>Joan J. Guinovart, director of IRB Barcelona, \u200b\u200bsays that &#8220;the medicine of the future\u00a0starts in in centres like IRB Barcelona. The discoveries being made here today by\u00a0young researchers\u00a0will serve to improve the quality of our lives. By donating, we are showing what kind of society we live in and\u00a0what really matters&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>To emphasize the importance of training, the campaign aims to\u00a0raise 25,000 euros\u00a0from individuals, associations and companies. This amount willfund the first of four years\u00a0that a\u00a0doctoral student\u00a0spends at\u00a0IRB Barcelona\u00a0working on a cutting-edge biomedical research project in order to obtain his or her PhD degree.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Appeal to schools and companies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Given the focus of the campaign on training,\u00a0IRB Barcelona has appealed to primary and secondary schools, and their Parent Teacher Associations, to organise fundraising events to support the campaign and to spread the word. As an integral part of the campaign, young researchers from IRB Barcelona will be visiting students at participating schools to do some hands-on experiments and to explain their work as scientists.<\/p>\n<p>Companies have also signed up to support the campaign\u00a0in various ways, one of which is through a\u00a0matched giving\u00a0scheme. In order to incentivize giving from the public, once IRB Barcelona has raised a given amount, companies will match these donations. The first companies to join the initiative are\u00a0Merck, Promega and Waters.<\/p>\n<p>This campaign is part of the international initiative\u00a0\u201cGiving Tuesday\u201d, which started in the US in 2012 as a movement held at the beginning of the holiday season focusing on charity and giving to offset the spending generated by \u201cBlack Friday\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cCyber \u200b\u200bMonday&#8221;.\u00a0This is the second year #GivingTuesday has been held in Spain, where it is known as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/givingtuesday.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cUn d\u00eda para dar\u201d\u00a0<\/a>(A day for giving).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2022<strong> &#8220;Futur&#8221;
